Introduce (~10 minutes)
Watch “Stages of Service Learning” video (4 minutes)
Review process and credit expectations, as well as Part I syllabus, with Nancy
Expose (~1 hour)
Read “Service Learning 101”
Annotate article - ideas you agree with, ideas you question, ideas you want to know more about
Watch and take notes on TED talks
“Service and Schools - Partnership on Purpose” (13 minutes)
“Being Young and Making an Impact” (13 minutes)
Take notes on talks to remember main points of each talk
Practice (30-60 minutes)
Check in with Nancy (bring your notes)
Discuss article and TED talks
Discuss your sense of service learning and your feelings about doing service
Discuss issues you are interested in - at CCHS, in school, in your broader community
Create (3 hours)
Based on article, TED talks, and discussions, write an informative essay using this Classroom assignment about the context of service learning
Follow this basic outline:
Introduction: hook, context, overview sentence
Support #1: the purpose and process of service learning
Support #2: what service learning can look like (use TED talks and discussions)
Support #3: how you would like to make an impact
Conclusion: where do you go from here? Why does this matter? What are your hopes and dreams for your project?
Reflect (~1 hour; could be more if essay draft is completed poorly)
Evaluate your essay with this rubric (print a copy)
Check in with Nancy about your essay; revise as needed
