Race can be an extremely contentious issue in society - especially given recent events with protests and riots in response to killings of Black people by the police.
But just because it's contentious doesn't mean we should avoid addressing it... on the contrary. Senior Seminar is a place to wrestle with difficult subjects in our society so we can understand them better, understand how we feel about these topics, and understand how to discuss them honestly and respectfully.
INTRODUCE
Take the Harvard Implicit Bias test
From the link above, read the preliminary info page and click "I wish to proceed" at the bottom. Choose "Race IAT" from the list of tests on the lefthand side.
Print your results at the end of the test.
Discuss: were you surprised by your results? do you trust the test results?
If you are completing independently: set up a time to check in with the teacher or send an e-mail with your thoughts
Review syllabus and expectations for the module

Read "Nice White People" from Austin Channing Brown's Book I'm Still Here
Choose a race-related topic mentioned in "Nice White People". Find an article on Ebscohost (login info is listed in the Academic Handbook, p. 40) that speaks to this topic; annotate it and add notes (and the article title) to your note catcher
**Remember, these sources are provided for you to learn about the topic from multiple perspectives. You are not being asked to agree with the viewpoints shared, but rather to consider how the viewpoints presented align with your own beliefs - and to engage in a conversation where you are using various perspectives to deepen your own understanding and clarify your perspective.
PRACTICE
Engage in Socratic seminar-style discussion based on the sources you read, watched, and listened to. Reference your annotations and the note catcher to add depth to the discussion.
If you are completing independently: schedule a time to have a discussion with the teacher. It is recommended that you coordinate with other students taking the module for a more dynamic discussion, if possible.
CREATE
Synthesize what you have learned about race with your choice of DOK: Senior Seminar DOK Choices
Your DOK must integrate your response to each of the following questions:
What is race?
How does race influence our interactions with people?
How should race and racism be addressed in schools?
What is the takeaway message from this class, as it relates to your life?
Self-evaluate your DOK using the appropriate scoring guide and revise as needed
REFLECT
Conference with Steve about your DOK and your experience with this module
