Philip II and the Protestant Reformation
1483-1546
1509-1564
Martin Luther and John Calvin used the recently invented printing press to distribute thousands of copies of the new Bible, the book that everyone should be able to read and interpret without a mediator (i.e. a priest).
The Anglican Reformation is a different story; it was linked to politics and power rather than a quest for spiritual change. England suffered the persecutions of Catholics, Protestants, and again Catholics before becoming a stable, powerful, and independent kingdom. Along the way, it became one of the most hated enemies of the Spanish Empire.
