CHRISTIANS IN NORTHERN SPAIN
Moros y Cristianos is the name of the chapter you have to read, but it is also the name of many festivals in southern Spain. They recreate the battles that took place in the Middle Ages that ended up with the conquest of Granada in 1492.
Read this interesting chapter and below are some people mentioned in those pages.
El Cantar del Mío Cid -The Song of my Cid- is the oldest poem written in (Castillian) Spanish in the 12th or 13th century. It narrates the life of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, a Christian soldier from Burgos who is exiled from the Christian kingdoms.
He then conquers Valencia from the Moors and becomes a hero. It is full of interesting stereotypes of Christian, Muslims, and Jews. Here are some of the movies inspired by the poem and the coffin of Raquel and Vidas.
RACHEL AND VIDAS - CANTAR DEL MIO CID
In the poem, el CID loses favor with King Alfonso and is banished from the court. He is given nine days to leave Castile. Gathering his family, soldiers, and vassals, he heads for Burgos. But the residents deny him shelter. Only Martín Antolinez sends them wine and bread and then joins El Cid’s camp himself. There is no money, and the soldiers need food. So El Cid decides to use deception. He says to Martin,
With your help I will make two chests, and we will fill them with sand, so that they be heavy, and they shall be covered with red leather and studded with gilt nails, and thou shalt go to Rachel and Vidas, and say that I cannot carry with me my treasure, for it is very weighty, and that I would pawn it for what may be reasonable. I call God and all his Saints to witness, that I cannot help this, and do it against my will.
El Cid tricks the money lenders by giving them two ornately carved chests filled with sand. He lets them believe that there is something of value in the chests and borrow 600 marks against the chests while making them agree not to open the chests for a year.
