Physical Geography

Kosovo is in the center of the Balkan Peninsula. It is one of the smallest countries in Europe. Kosovo is surrounded by many mountains, there are also mountains in the southeast that are the countries highest peak. The central region of Kosovo is mainly hilly, but there are two large plains that spread over the west and east. The main rivers in Kosovo are the White Drin River, the South Morava River, and the Lbar River. There are many natural lakes there but the countries most important lakes are artificial.


Climate-

Kosovo has a variety of climates and it is affected by the Mediterranean Mild Climate and the European Continental Climate. There is heavy rainfall in the west compared to the east. The winters are cold with medium temperatures above 14 degrees fahrenheit but sometimes is -15 degrees fahrenheit. The summers can be very hot in Kosovo with a temperature of 68 degrees fahrenheit but sometimes up to 99 degrees fahrenheit. In the winter there is heavy snowfall and up by the mountains and forests there is heavy rainfall, summers that are short and cold, and winterds that are cold with a lot of snow.


Human Geography

The capital of Kosovo is Pristine and it is the largest city with more than 500,000 people. One place to visit there is Germia Park. Germia park is in the north-east of Pristine, Kosovo. In Germia Park there are forests, meadows, mountains, and a huge swimming pool. You can hike or bike up the trails there too. There's a children's playground for kids to play on and there's a nearby restaurant or you can bring a picnic.

Government- The government in Kosovo is made up of government ministers and is led by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is elected by the Assembly of Kosovo. Ministers are nominated by the Prime Minister, and then confirmed by the Assembly of Kosovo. Ramush Haradinaj is the current Prime Minister of Kosovo and he was elected after the June 9, 2017 elections.

Population- The current population in Kosovo is 1, 808, 161. 51.5% of the population is male and 48.5% of it is female. The population has grown by 1,050 people this year. There has been 12, 596 births this year but there has been 8,397 deaths this year. Throughout this year 3,149 people have left Kosovo.

Culture-

Clothing- Most of the people in Kosovo are Albanian or Serbian. Kosovo has a big cultural heritage including monuments, clothing items, museums, and traditional food. Clothes were either homemade or made by craftsman that were specialized in that field. There are over 200 different kinds of clothing and styles of wearing clothes depending on wear your from, the history of your clan, and many other reasons. The men usually have on long woolen white pants called tirq or a fustanella which is a skirt type costume. The women wear a xhubleta which is a skirt like type of clothing.

Language- The main language in Kosovo is Albanian, but many people are trying to protect their own languages. In Prizren, almost every institution has its name written it Turkish. The OSCE says that Kosovo should bring everyone together to learn each others languages.

Food- The best and most distinctive traditional food in Kosovo in the flija. The flija is made year round but is Favorited in the summer. The national food of Kosovo is the Cheese Byrek. Cheese Byrek is a type of baked or filled pastry. They are made up of a thin flaky dough called phyllo dough and are filled with salty cheese, minced meat, potatoes or other vegetables. Meat is in their daily meals. Since there is a harsh continental climate vegetables are made mainly in the summer.
