National Junior Honor Society Selection Process FAQ 2026-27
What is the National Junior Honor Society?
National Junior Honor Society is an organization that seeks to highlight students who show strength in five areas: leadership, service, character, citizenship, and scholarship. At Bellbrook, students who are inducted in the National Honor Society meet as an organization throughout the year and take part in a variety of activities. They hold fundraisers, volunteer at school events, and create projects or events that help make BMS a better place.
If I am inducted as a 7th grader, what can I expect during my 8th-grade year?
Expect to give up your Eagle period approximately twice a month (more often if you are elected to an officer position).
Plan to volunteer at least 2 hours per quarter. This might be achieved through school opportunities such as peer tutoring, but many members have to look for opportunities themselves in the community.
Plan to take part in achieving some goal as part of a committee. You might also be asked to provide leadership as part of your committee.
How do I know if I am eligible for NJHS?
If you have earned a 3.5 GPA by the end of 3rd Quarter, you will receive an email from Mrs. Crane or Mr. Ferguson letting you know you are eligible. This will include details of how to pick up the application packet and when it is due.
When should I expect to receive this email?
Expect this email sometime during the week of March 16, 2026.
Who should I talk to if I have questions about filling out the application?
Please email Mrs. Crane or Mr. Ferguson with questions.
When will the application be due?
Expect applications to be due around April 14. 2026. They will not be accepted past the due date.
How and when will I be notified about whether I was accepted into NJHS?
A letter will be mailed to your home after the selection committee has made their final decisions. Expect this letter 1-2 weeks after the due date of the application. You will also receive an email from Mr. Ferguson or Mrs. Crane.
How is membership determined?
A team of teachers meets to evaluate applications. Mr. Ferguson and Mrs. Crane organize the selection committee but do not make the decision as to who gets in and who doesn’t.
Filling out the application:
Leadership:
We are looking for at least one clear example of a time when you have demonstrated leadership. This should be a time when you were put in charge of a group of people and asked to make sure they completed a task. A good example of leadership is: being in charge of a small group of students at a youth sports camp and teaching them a new skill. This is NOT an example of leadership: cheering on my teammates on my soccer team. We would rather see one good example of you clearly demonstrating leadership amongst your peers than 5 examples of you being a good teammate or sibling.
The people who sign your leadership experiences should not be your family members.
Service:
We are looking for at least 14 hours of community service, served between the summer before your 6th-grade year and now. Peer tutoring or a service project through a church or community organization are good examples. Helping out around your house or being paid to babysit are not good examples of community service.
The people who sign your leadership experiences should not be your family members.
Character:
Keep in mind that detentions, excessive attendance in Catch Up Cafe, and excessive absence will count against you when it comes to character.
Teacher feedback is one factor used to determine a student’s eligibility for character. We will ask your teachers what kind of a student you are in their classrooms.
Receiving an in school or out of school suspension usually means a student is automatically disqualified from NJHS.
Citizenship:
Involvement in extracurricular activities is used to determine citizenship. We like to see members who demonstrate a variety of interests. We also place value on a mixture of involvement in school activities and out-of-school activities. For example-- you play a school sport and you are involved in Scouting.
