Year 8 Physical Education and Health aims to build on the fundamental skills developed in the year 7 program. In PE students will experience a variety of individual (Fitness & Gymnastics) and team based (Sport Education, Game Sense & Major Games) units, which will challenge them to be creative, resilient and collaborative whilst learning new skills and movement concepts. The Health topics studied at Year 8 are Alcohol, Drugs and Risk Taking (Semester 1) and Relationships and Sexuality (Semester 2). Students will participate in interactive workshops in order to develop an understanding of key concepts and develop strategies that can be implemented to improve their health and wellbeing.
What is studied?
Within this subject student learning is based upon the following key knowledge and concepts:
Sport Education: undertaking roles and responsibilities as part of a sporting competition.
Major Games – AFL/ Soccer, Cricket / Softball, Netball / Basketball. Skills, Game Understanding, Tactics & Strategies.
Cultural Games – Students will participate in a variety of Australian Indigenous games
Fitness: testing, reflection & goal setting. Fitness components. Team Fitness Challenge.
Game Sense – space, time, risk and execution in sport. Link to ‘Invasion’, ‘Net / Wall’ and ‘Striking / Fielding Sports

Within this subject student learning is developed and assessed through:
Practical Units. Individual skill development. Collaborating in a team environment.
Assessment: Teacher Observation, Reflection Tasks, Formative and Summative Rubrics.
Health Units: Workshops, collaborative activities and research tasks.
Assessment: submission of research task & workbook.
