BALLOT STATEMENTS

/ˈbalətˈstātmənts/

Here are the candidates running for the senator position in Student Senate.   CLICK  on your respective class to view the candidates' applications and list your choices on the ballot form (i.e. ranked choice voting).  REMEMBER  you can only vote for your class. We believe that ranked choice voting gives significant value to all the voices that make up the Brooklyn Latin School, your vote on the various candidates from each class will be considered to your class' senators! You can find more information below.

[ ABOUT VOTING ]

RANKED CHOICE VOTING

In ranked choice voting, if a candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, they are declared the winner. If no candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated. First-preference votes cast for the failed candidate are eliminated, lifting the second-preference choices indicated on those ballots. A new tally is conducted to determine whether any candidate has won a majority of the adjusted votes. The process is repeated until a candidate wins a majority.

TRIBUNE ELECTIONS

Our tribunes will be decided on a volunteer basis. Homeroom teachers will ask for volunteers, at which point you should raise your hand! If more than two people are interested in your homeroom, tribunes will be asked to make a short speech, and afterwards, a vote will be taken.

[ ABOUT RULES ]

HOUSE RULES

  • Posters must be approved by Mr. Hill before being posted on the tile, not paint

  • Kind and respectful campaigns, no attack ads

  • Encourage fellow discipuli to vote on the election days

  • No bribery of any kind

  • No distribution of food (e.g. candy, cookies, gum)

WHAT  IS  BRIBERY EXACTLY?

Handing out items, indiscriminately, as a part of your campaign is fine. (pencils, stickers, etc.) This is advertising;

Hi, would you like a free sticker? By the way, I’m running for  Senator. I would appreciate your support!

However, these items become bribes when distributed specifically in exchange for votes.

I’m giving out candy to everyone who votes for me!” or “If you vote for me, I’ll give you one of these pencils!

Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in the suspension of your campaign.
