The Gambian Government is committed to addressing critical nutrition issues, particularly the high rates of stunting and wasting among children under five. To combat these problems, the National Nutrition Policy and Strategic Plan aims to improve the nutritional status of the population in The Gambia by addressing micronutrient deficiencies and the increasing rates of non-communicable diseases.
This policy outlines a comprehensive approach involving multiple interventions, such as improving access to nutritious foods and enhancing food security by boosting agricultural potential and diversifying diets, especially among vulnerable populations. It also emphasises enhancing nutrition education and strengthening healthcare systems.
Addressing these interconnected challenges requires a concerted effort from multiple stakeholders. Collaboration among Government agencies, healthcare providers, and international partners is essential for sharing knowledge and enhancing skills for implementing sustainable and effective nutrition interventions in the future.
