What is Fireside?
Fireside is a feature- length film script that I am currently co-writing with my friend, Thinara, and was born from and inside joke that we had, which quickly snowballed into a story concept. With us both being avid film lovers and writers, myself having written screenplays before, we decided to co-write a script for the concept. Thinara mainly focuses on the flow of the plot and I do the bulk of writing out the story, ironing out the fine details to get character development and plot progression as smooth as possible. We both have an equal level of say in the story and proof-read each other's writing, leaving comments on what we liked and suggestions about what could be changed or improved.
What is it about?
I can't say too much about the plot just yet, but it is a comedy crime film following two main characters, Thins and Macie, who are a sort of alternate version of us. While being a comedy, there are emotional scenes and the film touches on many topics from gender identity to race to adoption. Thins and Macie's humour is fairly dead pan and we took some inspiration for the writing style from the film by Charles Crichton and John Cleese, A Fish Called Wanda (1988).
When did we start writing and where are we at now?
We started writing at the very start of July 2021, after having mapped out the main plot line in June. We wrote for most of the Summer holidays in our spare time and are still writing, of course less now as we have to balance college work and opportunities with writing. Currently, we are on our first draft, but we are both writing away and hope to start on our second draft sometime during the next summer break.
Screenplay Extracts
Scene 5
An extract from the middle of Scene 5 in our screenplay.
By this point, Macie and Thins have been arguing because Macie feels hurt by a number of things Thins has done, which have all built up to this dispute.
This is a monologue from Lena, Macie's sick mother, later in Scene 5.
Lena has had a back and forth with Macie and Thins to find out what's happened between them, finally Thins tells her.
