Enough kit to keep you warm and dry and safe in emergency
Wear - what we call your 'Wet Set' - the set that can get wet!
Walking boots – waterproof and offering ankle support
Walking socks
Lightweight trousers, quick drying (NO denim, heavy tracksuit, leggings)
T-shirt – (not cotton if possible)
Fleece top or hoodie (pack in good weather)
Waterproof jacket and trousers (pack in good weather)
Gaiters (Bronze – optional, Gold – recommended)
Carry - what we call your 'Dry Set' - so this should all be in water proof bags, within your rucksack:
Spare socks and underwear
Spare trousers/leggings (thermal leggings are a good option as they are light and can be used to sleep in).
Spare T-shirt(s) (again a long long sleeve thermal/wicking top is a good option, avoid cotton if possible)
Second warm layer , to put over the top of your fleece/ hoodie if required.
Hat, gloves (spares if wet/cold weather forecast)
Camping Kit
Rucksack* (55-65 litre capacity, back-packing style)
WATERPROOF LINER for your rucksack (rucksacks are NOT waterproof). A ‘rubble sack’ is an ideal cheap option.
Torch, spare batteries (head torch is ideal)
Sleeping bag AND sleeping mat
Matches/lighter
Water Bottles– ability to carry at least 2 litres (3 litres if the forecast is for warm weather).
Mug, bowl, spoon. No need for any other cutlery.
Tent**: inner, outer, poles, pegs
Trangia** (cooking stove) and gas*
Other
Sun cream (all year round) and (for summer) sun hat
First Aid kit: ANY PERSONAL MEDICATION plus plasters, blister plasters, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen
Wash kit: bring toothpaste and a brush, travel wash and (for multi-day trips only) a small travel towel. No point bringing anything else
Whistle (often on rucksack chest strap)
Fully charged SWITCHED OFF mobile phone for use in an emergency
* We have a limited number of rucksacks that can be borrowed.
**Tents and Trangia stoves will be provided by the school in advance of each expedition. Gas, compasses, a small group First Aid kit and Emergency Procedures card will also be supplied to each group at the start of the expedition.
Students may use their own tent if it has an inner tent and outer tent (no festival pop-up tents!), weighs less than 2kg per person and has a porch area. Please check with Mr Parfitt BEFORE confirming use of a personal tent.
