Food Advice
Low weight, tasty, easy to clean
Food: you need about 3500 calories per day.
Breakfasts
‘Instant’ porridge: either pots that you pour hot water into or sachets that you can empty into a bowl and add hot water. Add a hot chocolate sachet if you want! NOT traditional prridge to cook on the stove (it will burn).
Cereal/breakfast bars
Tea / hot chocolate.
Day time
Lunch: oat cakes, crackers, wraps. Smoked cheese, Pepperami /Baby Bels, chorizo. Anything that is rich in calories, includes complex carbohydrates (not just simple sugars), is not too bulky and will not be destroyed in your bag or go off in the heat.
Snacks: flapjacks, cereal bars, nuts, dried fruit, Jelly Babies, chocolate (does melt!), apples. NOT bananas (unless you want a bag full of banana mush)
Evening Meals
(Check calories – aim for 600 - 800)
Flavoured CousCous (put in a resealable freezer bag)
Supernoodles (ideally NOT Pot Noodles)
Pepperami, mini chorizo sausages (good protein and salts)
Dehydrated meals: there are lots of brands available, e.g. Firepot, Adventure Food
Boil in the Bag – e.g. Wayfayrer - or ‘Microwave in the Bag’ works as well (you simply put in boiling water and heat through for 10 minutes)
Pasta stir in sauces with pasta (no glass jars)
Tea, hot chocolate
(NO frying)
Emergency Food
More snacks – these must be packed separately and shown at the end of the expedition (you can eat them on the journey home!). Flapjack, cereal bars are best.
