In the last swim meet that took place on January 23rd, 2024. The Bartlesville High School seniors were shouted out halfway through and they told everyone what they would do after high school. In terms of what happened during the meet, Bartlesville won again in a landslide. A senior, Cody Lay did exceptionally well with a freshman, Parker Shoesmith following very close behind him with only milliseconds differentiating them. For a freshman to be able to perform just as well as a senior is highly impressive.

Our Bruins this time had a close call with Booker T. Washington. While we did great compared to the other teams in most categories, in the women’s we got behind for a little bit but we still managed to win in the end. Griffin Craig as expected, scored high and had fast times but our freshman as a total did really well in a lot of the events, getting in the top three in almost every event they did. A particular swimmer that stood out was Anna Young, with her getting 1st place in all of her solo events.

The bruin swim team met up this Tuesday for their third meet and we won again just like the other two meets. Some swimmers that really stood out are Cody Lay and Aysen Offutt. Cody won every event he was in beating the competition by a considerable amount every time. Aysen did well and was shouted out. “Aysen is the man. He leads this team over everyone else, sometimes not through his words but always through his actions.” - Griffin Craig. Everyone did well and swam hard, the student section cheered really hard too doing hand gestures and screaming for their team. The high school baseball team was also there to cheer and give the team their support.

Swimmer Spotlight - Griffin Craig
by Ian Turner
Griffin Craig is a senior at Bartlesville high school and has been swimming since middle school. He now swims for the high school team. Griffin played a lot of sports before joining swim, but his cousin inspired him to join swim in middle school and he has liked it ever since. Even Though Griffin is great at swimming, he doesn't plan to swim for his career. He does plan to swim in college at the University of Missouri, and plans to just keep swimming for fun to stay in shape even when he has a job. Although Griffin is very good at swimming and has a very good mentality, it wasn't always this way. Only about a year ago Griffin was really struggling with balancing swimming and highschool all at once. He was not only struggling emotionally and mentally, but physically as well. Doing swimming and high school at the same time can put a lot of mental and physical strain on the body, but he pulled through and was able to make it. Griffin says that he got the confidence to stay in swimming and keep on pushing because he knew that even though he was at one of the lowest points in his life he knew that eventually it would get a lot better. He knew that life would be a lot better, knowing that he pushed through a tough time and that his hard work and dedication would eventually pay off, and it did. For all of the new and young swimmers Griffin says, “that you should stay in it if you really like it. “If you don't like it then dont play it, because playing a sport you don't enjoy can be bad for your mental health.”

In Bartlesville High School’s first swim meet our team consistently scored considerably higher than the other four teams. Our school had consistent scores in the hundreds while every other team had them in the double digits only getting in the hundreds a couple times through all of the teams combined. One student that really showed their strengths for The Bruins tonight was Ashlynn Taylor who got in the top three in every event she was in. As for the boys team, Griffin Craig did exceptionally well by placing 1st in three out of four of his events. All our swimmers worked hard, played hard, and did well by doing so. While those were just some of the swimmers that did well, the whole team deserved the good cool off they got in the end after their job well done.
