Bruins Drop A Close One To Stillwater 14-10
Written by Daniel Humby

The bruins thought if the first six plays were the direction the game was heading we would lose, but they were able to adapt by picking up the defense. The Bruins staunch run defense began easily shutting down Stillwater's drives. At half time I asked coach Hubbler what the plan was and he said "we have to control the ball". That is exactly what the Bruins did throughout the second half.
In the third quarter PJ Wallace began to dominate the Stillwater defense with some great field vision and downhill running. Shortly after this the bruins had their first touchdown of the game from Damien Niko and the bruins made their extra point. The rest of the second half was dominated by defense on both sides. Bruin punter Braxton Decker had an amazing night, averaging around 45 yards per punt and helping to keep Stillwater backed deep ion their territory. Even after all the bruins did, a couple of costly penalties on the final drive allowed Stillwater to score. On the subsequent kickoff, starting our last chance drive, there was a penalty and the coaches opted for a rekick. This decision led to a muffed return and gave Stillwater the ball back to end the game. The Bruins fought hard to secure the victory, but in the end penalties and poor decisions let to the unfortunet loss.
BRUINtron Makes Its Introduction
Homecoming night was the perfect opportunity to finally showcase the new BHS video board dubbed “BRUINtron”. It is the third largest in the state and is an absolutely beautiful addition to Custer Stadium. The screen itself is ran by a production staff comprised entirely of BHS students. These students were a combination of the new BHS Sports Media program and the BruinTV Advanced Broadcasting Program. “These students have only been in the program for 9 weeks now, and have had less than 2 weeks hands on with the videoboard since its completion”, said Scott Vermeire their Bruin Media teacher. “Their ability to learn quickly, handle high expectations, and convert their stress to excitement is what led them to such a great show Friday night.” The production crew comprised of cameramen - Jacob Briggs, Wyatt Bates, Emmett Woronko, and Lukas Kub; runners – Daniel Humby and Nathaniel Munoz; BRUINtron operator – Rook Rogers; and production lead Keeley Beteson, made magic happen and put together an amazing show. “I could not be more proud of how well they did. You would have thought they had been doing this for years”, said Vermeire. “Rook and Keeley really showed their ability to take charge, step up and own it!” These students will only have a few short days to recover, check equipment, and create new graphics before they are back at it again this Thursday night for our next home game against Stillwater.

Bruins Win Big In Waning Moments

Friday night was a perfect night for football. There was a distinct fall chill to the air, and an energy that filled the stadium. It was homecoming night and the Bruins were looking for a big win over Putnum City West. As the fans trickled into the stadium, they were met with the beautiful glow of the new video board, dubbed the “BRUINtron”. It is the third largest in the state and homecoming was a perfect night to unveil it. From the player introductions to the run out music, the fans were electric and charging up the team. As the game kicked off the Bruins took an early lead on a rushing TD, set up by a long pass getting into the redzone quickly. A few plays later the defense was able to force and recover a fumble, which set up our next TD. Starting the 2nd quarter 14-0, it was a back and forth struggle until Putnam was able to force a fumble and return it for their first score. Putnam’s next score would also be set up by another Bruin fumble. With the time running down on the clock the Bruins mustered a great scoring drive led by host a long passes and excellent receptions. Putnam City wasn’t done yet as they punished the defense with an 80 yard end around and completing the 2-point attempt to tie the game 21-21 at the half. The second half was not as exciting offensively as the first, but it was more defensive. The Bruins were finally able to get back on the scoreboard with around a minute left in the 3rd, going back up 28-21, but Putnam City settled the score with another long end around run tying it back up at 28-28. The fourth quarter the bruins couldn’t seem to get any momentum on offense and had several unfortunate unsportsmanlike penalties called that allowed Putnam City to keep drives alive. On Putnam City’s final drive the defense needed a boost. Between the crowd, band, and hype from the BRUINtron, the defense once again forced and recovered a crucial fumble setting up the game winning field goal. The final score, 31-28 Bartlesville, proves that when this team is hungry, the #EAT!
Sorrowful Loss for The Bruins 27-14
Written by: Veronica McGill
This last Friday, September 14th, the Bartlesville Bruins played their third game of the season with an upsetting loss against the Collinsville Cardinals. The Bruins were ready for an exhilarating challenge at their first away game and with multiple injured players nervousness filled the air. Opening the game in the first quarter the Bruins fought hard and broke out with an early lead. However, the lead was unfortunately taken away by the Cardinals soon after, beginning halftime with a score of 20-7. The bruin crowd were on their feet and passionately cheering throughout the game. The real battle began in the second half. The Bruins had outstanding defence holding the cardinals, and in the final minutes The Bruins were able to narrow the cardinal lead with astonishing offense bringing the score to 20-14. Although, with only a singular immense stop the bruins came up short and lost the game 27-14. Only the 3rd game in the season and multiple games to go, the Bruins can rise up for the next challenge and show their true strength.

Heartbreaking loss for the Bruins 28-27
Written by: Tanner Yardley
Last night the Bartlesville Bruins faced off the Claremore Zebras. Going into the game, the Bruins were ready to win and get a good start to their season. Coach Wright, the Bruins head coach, said “They have done the work, they put in the time, now it’s time to see what they can do.” The game was back and forth the whole night with many ups and downs. At halftime, the Bruins discovered that their starting Quarterback, #7 Nate Neal broke his collarbone and will be out for a while. They had to change their game plan and put in their backup, #2 Brett Eaves. With the game on his shoulders going into the 2nd half of the season opener, he was ready to win the game. With the help of PJ Wallace and Damein Niko, they got the score to 21 to 14 Claremore. Although Claremore was on top, the tides were changing in the game as the Bruins continued to stop the Zebras’ offense. Getting closer and closer to the end of the game, Bartlesville got the lead to 27-21 in the fourth quarter. In the final minutes, Claremore had one more chance to win the game and ended up scoring the winning touchdown.. The final score was 28-27. After the game, Coach Ketiku said, “We have to stick to the game plan, a few bumps and a few mishaps. We are going to correct a few things and come back better.” Even though it was not the best way to start out their season, Bartlesville still has a whole season ahead of them.
Bruin Cross Begins
By Coach Vermeire
27 Aug 2023
The Bruins kicked off their cross country season this past Friday at the Owasso Relays. These relays have been a tradition for some time now, and a good way for the athletes to get in the competitive spirit without having to race the normal full 5k. These relays pit teams of 4 athletes against each other, with each athlete having to race 1.5 miles. Although just under half the distance of their normal race, the runners know it will be ran at a higher pace. This race typically takes place in Mohawk Park, but do to tree damage in that area the race was moved to O’Brien Park. This provided even more of challenge to the runners since this course was uncharted territory. They now had to battle competitive runners, a new course, and surging temperatures.
The Lady Bruins were the first to take the course. They had 5 relay teams competing against 45 others. As the first set of runners took to the course and disappeared in the distance it was hard to tell where the Bruins stood. As the first set of runners crossed the finish line and handed off their baton, the Lady Bruins were in 12th place, and would remain there until the final leg of the relay. Gentry Turner, senior captain, took the baton and began to torch past her competition. Over her 1.5 mile lap she was able to pass a staggering 7 runners and helped her relay team (MaryAnn Alvey, Emily Lechuga, and Kate Manley) finish in 5th place. The remaining relay teams finished in 16th, 26th, 42nd, and 46th. Despite the heat and new course, several of the girls already showed improvements in their 1.5 mile times since their time trail the week before. Of the 21 runners, over half improved their time by an average of around 38 seconds, showing that this a competition ready squad prepared for the upcoming season.
The boys took to the course next. They had 5 relay teams as well and competed against a field of 51 other teams. Their relay teams did not fare quite as well finishing in the 11th, 28th, 37th, 46th and 55th positions. This boy’s team is very young however and shows great potential for being a powerhouse in the future. Coach Turowski stated he was very pleased with their efforts, and was pleasantly surprised with Luke Bulleigh’s opening leg. He said they will be working hard this week prepping for a little bit longer of race this upcoming weekend in Sapulpa. Cross Country head coach, Coach Ayres had this to say about his teams, “I saw a lot of perseverance, a lot of hard work that paid off, you can tell these boys and girls really pushed themselves, it’s hot, but they didn’t complain and they came out and they did a really good job.” The Bruin XC squads will compete again this Saturday in Sapulpa at the Westside Sport Complex starting at 9:25am.
Lady Bruins Roughed Up the Spartans
By Coach Vermeire
If you are not a fan of volleyball, you would be if you watched the matches last night between the Bixby Spartans and your Bartlesville Bruins. The freshmen played first set of matches. In game one of the series the Bruins got off to a slow start down by 6 points, but rallied back hard for a solid 25-21 win. In game two they played well together, and as a team proved victorious with a 25-20 victory, and sweeping the series 2-0. Next up were the junior varsity matches. These did not go as well for the Bruins who just seemed to never get under their feet. They seemed off balanced and outgunned at every turn. The Spartans swept this series 2-0 with a 25-13 win in game one, and a 25-12 win in game two.
Next up was the varsity matches. These were an absolute showdown. In game one, the Bruins came out swinging and dominated the Spartans 25-17 behind some amazing defense by Sofie Frye and the powerful spikes of Kelsey Ward. Moving into game two things got really heated. It was a back and forth match where no one seemed to have the upper hand. When the smoke cleared the Bruins were the ones on top 25-23. Heading into game three the Bruins were confident they could put the Spartans away, but that is not what happened. The Spartans came out with a more aggressive approach that proved productive and got the Bruins on their heels. The Bruins held on as long as they could, but they just seemed to be plagued by bad serves, giving the upper hand to the Spartans who won 25-21. Game four ended up being the match everyone came to watch for the evening. The Bruins found themselves down by 4 to 5 points at times but always rallied back to stay in the game. Toward the end of the match the Bruins even held a 9 point lead in what seemed like a definitive win. After a questionable call that went in favor of the Spartans, they were able to rally back to tie up the match. The final points were nothing but spectacular to witness and had the whole crowd on the edge of their seats. The Bruins proved they deserved their win and came out on top 25-23, winning the series 3-1.
The Lady Bruins will be going on the road for their next matches this Friday, all participating in tournaments. The freshman will be going to Catoosa, the junior varsity will be going to Southmoore, and the varsity will be at Lincoln Christian. Best of luck to our Lady Bruins and a well-deserved Great Job on last night’s games.
