Bartlesville Gets Shut Down By The Rams

It was Senior night for Bartlesville against Owasso. At the beginning of the first quarter, it was a close 7-5 point game. It all started to go downhill from there. The Bruins could not keep control of the ball and turned the ball over many times allowing the Rams to get a quick 20-5 point lead over the Bruins. The Ram's defense was outstanding and did not even allow a basket to be scored until early in the 3rd quarter. At that point, Owasso snuffed out hope of winning their Senior night game. Even though the Bruins were down big they still fought as hard as they could. It was an unfortunate loss for Bartlesville's last home game of the season. The final score was 80-20 Rams.

Bartlesville Bruins JV falls to Ponca City

Boy, this one sure was a tough loss for our JV Bruins! Yesterday, at 5:00 pm, Bartlesville Bruins took on the Ponca City Wildcats in a JV faceoff. To begin things off in the First half, both teams started off pretty good, with the Bruins having good defense and communication. However, Ponca City was able to take the lead early, so the Bruins were hoping to even out the playing field, as #11 Trae Collins had made great progress in the game, and not only was he good in defense, but he was also very communitave to his teammates too, precisly where to pass and who to pass too. So, together with him, #32 Skyler Carter, and the other Bruins, were able to make a quick comeback, but not for long, as Ponca City continued to stack up points back-to-back, and were able to defend their score. At Halftime, the Bruins were definitely hoping to redeem themselves, and after a pep talk with Coach Winston, they were determined to fight back. Sure enough, the Second Half turned out to be a turning point for both teams, as despite the fact both teams encountered fouls and fumbles, they recovered fast. Even though the Bruins had slowly caught up, it was just not enough as Ponca City defeated them 44-25. This is what Coach Winston said about the game: “I thought we did pretty good, however, I feel like just all the missed shots affect our confidence, and that’s how we fell downhill.”

Bartlesville VS Enid JV Boys

Bartlesville versus Enid was not a blowout, but it did not look that great. Both Junior Varsity teams had a solid game in the first quarter with just a 7-point lead by the Enid Plainsmen, 14-7. Enid kept up with this trend for the rest of the game until the fourth quarter, with Bartlesville constantly trailing by 7 or 8 points. It was really in the 4th quarter when things started to fall apart for the Bruins. They did not look as strong as they did previously and lost control of the game. Enid had the ball probably four times as much as Bartlesville. The Bruins kept turning it over, giving the Plainsmen chances to extend their strong lead. However, turnovers were not the only problem for Bartlesville. They were also very inconsistent from beyond the three-point range. In the fourth period though they got a little better with it, but they could not do enough to take the lead. Overall it was an entertaining game with the score being 53-46, Enid.

Bruin Freshman face a tough loss against Sapulpa

What a game it was last night! On Thursday Feburary 1, at 7:00 pm, the Bartlesville Bruin Freshman faced off against the Sapulpa Chieftains. To start off the game, both teams were equally fired up, eager to win the game, however, the Bruins Performed exceptionally well in the beginning of the first half. However, at one point, both teams tied, as Sapulpa quickly catched up, but even after Sapulpa had gone out of bounds, and the Bruins had a fumble, neither team was giving up. Then #15 Mason Sutton for the Bruins had started catching heat, as he had performed not 1, but 2 excellent throws, despite the fact they were behind by 11 points in the first half. But they still weren’t giving up, especially in the second half, which was a turnover for both teams. Both teams started catching up to another, and it possibly looked like it would be a close game. The Bruins were determined, focused and confident they would change up the game, but in the end, Sapulpa was just way faster than the Bruins and by a 15 point difference, they won 64-49. But both teams performed exceptionally well, as Coach Heath remarked, “I thought we battled for sure! We played hard and battled. But we just need to focus on one thing: Value the Ball.”

Junior Varsity Blues

By the second quarter of the bruin JV game, the Pirates were beating the Bruins by 19 points. After half time the bruins became more aggressive with shooting but it was just not enough. In the third quarter the bruins were hitting threes like crazy. The score at the end of the quarter was 51 to 34 in favor of the Pirates. They continued their 3-point hot streak into the 4th, but it proved to be too little too late. Sadly the bruins lost, with a final score of 64 to 51.

The Bruins win the war against US Grant.

Last Friday Night, The Bruin Varsity guys faced off against the away US Grant Generals at 8:00 PM. To kick things off in the first half, at the tip off, the Generals started catching up speed, going into the competition. However, Dennis Duncan for the Bruins ended up encountering a major fumble, but shortly afterwards, the Bruins were able to recover after that. Riley Doung was extremely composed and focused, as he was shooting hoops here and there, putting the Bruins into the lead. At one point, in the first half, both teams tied, however, both teams had major fumble recoveries in the first half. Coming into the second half, US Grant tried to regain their lead, but the Bruins were fired up, ready to win against them. Duong had made more successful passes, and was very good in both offense and defense, which also earned him the title of “MVP” of the game. As time picked up, US Grant tried to continue to play hard, and earn their lead back, but the Bruins must’ve been hungry, hungry to win! Because, in the end, they won 55-36! Head Coach Clent Stewart said, “I was very happy with how our team played out! The communication, the composition, and their passion to win!” I guess that just proves that the Bruins #EAT.

Bruins JV Nailbiter Victory

The Junior Varsity held a close one with U.S. Grant earlier tonight. In the first quarter, the Bruins had trouble stopping U.S. Grant offensively by the amount of rebounds they were giving up which led to a 11-17 lead for the Generals. At one point during the second quarter, it looked like Bartlesville was going to fall behind and let this game slip away from them, but they were able to stay in the game going into halftime. Leading into the second half nobody was really able to get anything going. The Bruins kept on shooting threes, which wasn’t very beneficial because they were very inconsistent. Not to say that the Generals did not have a hard time in the 3rd quarter, they could not get anything going either. The third quarter concluded with a 29-25 lead for U.S. Grant. Then the fourth quarter hit. It seemed that when the Bruins heard the buzzer go off to start the final quarter, they knew that they needed to step up and win this thing. In just five minutes the Bruins lead for the first time in the game, 36-34. Then when it looked like there was no question that Bartlesville was going to win this game with a two-point lead and 2.2 seconds left, they fouled. This gave the Generals the chance to send the game into overtime. A bad pass and a rushed shot to the basket is what ended the game in a Bartlesville Bruin Victory. The final score was 40-38.

Basketball Bruin Freshmen get defeated by Bixby

Boy, this one was a one to watch for sure! Last night, Our Bruin Freshman went head-to-head against the Bixby Spartans. To kick off the game and the first half, the Bruins had a very difficult first start, despite the fact they were focused and confident in themselves, however, the Spartans were just faster than the Bruins, although at one point, Bruins Shooting Guard Mason Sutton was able to pull of an excellent goal, which, slowly raised the Bruin’s score up in the first half. Along with Sutton, Cy Rigdon and Jay Wasemiller had made an excellent pass to each other. In the second half, however, the fields were turned. Despite both teams being tied in the beginning of the second half, both teams started gaining on each other, as one team would score, and then the other, it would’ve looked like a very close game. However, after receiving a foul, the Bruins just couldn’t recover after it, and the Spartans won the game 36-25. The Bruin Freshman faced another devastating loss, as Coach Deaton said, “Our team was very focused and they had their head in the game, but there were some situations that I felt like we could’ve been more composed.

Bruins Varsity and JV both fall to the Sandites

In the first quarter, the Junior Varsity team got off to a slow start. They did not look as physical as Sandsprings. At halftime the Sandites had a fifteen-point lead on Bartlesville with the score being 26-11. In the second half the Bruins put on a very physical start. Bartlesville got the Sandites to stumble, and give up many turnovers. This allowed the Bruins to stay in the game by keeping it a fifteen-point difference with the Sandites still in the lead. Unfortunately, in the fourth quarter the Bruins collapsed in on themselves and let the game get away from them. The Junior Varsity ended up losing, 46-29.

To start the Varsity game, both Bartlesville and Sandsprings were very physical and composed. As the first half went on though, Sandsprings got a foothold on the Bruins and they began increasing their lead little by little into the half with the score being 27-20. That close score unfortunately ended quickly. The Sandites ended up scoring 28 points on the Bruins in the 3rd quarter and Bartlesville was not able to score. As Sandsprings was adding to their lead, there was still some life in the Bruins. Nash Zervas, who was named player of the game, scored 16 points including back-to-back three’s as they ended the game. The Sandites still came out on top with a final score of 77-50.

Bruins Varsity Calms The Storm

OKC Storm will start the first period ahead with two free throws. This will be the first time the Bruins and Storm will meet for a game. With seven minutes three seconds left in the first, Nash Zervas(#3) from the Bruins scores the first three. Less than forty seconds later we see a 5:2 score in favor of the Bruins. Eli Robertson(#1) from the Bruins will have the majority of the scores in the first half of the first period. Jacob Veit(#2) of the Bruins takes the first foul on the Bruins with the score at 11:7 from his free throw in favor of the Bruins. Jacob Veit takes the majority of the Bruins' scores in the last half of the first period. We see a slam dunk from Stephano Farrington(#14) From OKC Storm ending the first period with a score of 20:14 in favor of the Bruins.

Riley Duong(#5) from the Bruins scores the first three of the second period. With five minutes ten seconds left in the second Parker Mills(#24) of the OKC Storm makes a three putting the score at 24:20 still in the Bruins favor. The free throws from OKC Storm put the score one point from a tie at 24:23 making it a nailbiter with one minute and fifty seconds left in the second period in favor of the Bruins. Jacob Veit(#2) scores a three with less than thirty seconds in the second period ending the period with a tied score at 27:27.

Nash Zervas(#3) from the bruins will score the first three of the third period at less than a minute in. With three minutes and thirty seconds left of the third period the score is 37:35 in the Bruins favor. OKC Storm will take the lead with one minute thirty-three seconds left in the third period. With a score of 40:37 in favor of the OKC Storm. Stephano Farrington(#14) of the OKC Storm puts up the majority of the points in the last three minutes of the third period making the score 42:39 in favor of OKC Storm at the end of the third.

To start the invigorating fourth period Riley Duong(#5) of the Bruins scores a three. The Bruins take back the lead with four minutes thirty-four seconds left of the fourth period at a score of 47:44. Nash Zervas(#3) of the Bruins made a three with three minutes forty seconds left in the fourth. With an intense minute and thirty seconds left in the fourth the Bruins remain ahead with a score of 50:46. With less than one minute left two sets of two free throws will make the score 53:49 in favor of the Bruins. Final score was 54:51 with the Bruins being victorious.

JV Bruins VS OKC Storm

With three minutes and thirty-five seconds left in the first period, number two from the OKC Storm tied up the game with a three making it 8:8. The competitiveness of this JV game is intense. With fourteen seconds left number twelve of the Bartlesville Bruins scored a three, tying the game once again at 14:14.

With four minutes and forty five seconds left in the second period number twenty-four of OKC Storm tied the game at 22:22. It seems the Bruins have calmed their excitement to start the game and are tailoring their technique to better work against the OKC Storms style. A three from number zero on the Bartlesville Bruins makes it 30:26 in favor of the Bruins with two minutes thirty seconds left of the second period. Number twenty-three of the Bartlesville Bruins scored a layup ending the second period at 37:30 in favor of the Bruins.

Number zero of the Bruins makes the first three of the third period. At two minutes and thirty seconds left of the third period. The Bruins appear with better conditioning and higher morale. Seeing lots of work from the Bruins at the end of the third period we have a score of 56:36 in favor of the Bartlesville Bruins.

To start the fourth period the Bruins had numerous fouls and a comeback from the OKC storm putting the score at 58:47 in favor of the Bruins with three minutes and thirty three seconds left. One minute later and we see good work from both sides making the score 61:51 still in the Bruins favor. Final score is 64:54 Favoring the Bruins.

The Bruin Freshman had their next home game against the Jenks Trojans on Thursday, January 4th at 7:00. During the first half of the game, the Bruins did extremely well as defense, as Cy Rigdon took his role as a guard very seriously. However, the Trojans began catching up shortly after, with many 3-pointers, and free throws, which led to them scoring 30-15. In the second half, the Bruins just couldn’t catch up, as it was just score, after score, after score, the Trojans ended up getting boosted from 30 to 60. Despite the fact that they were ready and all prepared for when the Trojans were gonna score, it just seems their communication was off by a little, which gave the Trojans the win. However, not all hope is lost for the Freshman, as Coach Heath stated, “Looking back, we just need to start getting more prepared and focused coming back from Winter Break. However, I like the encouragement of our team and how everyone was locked in, and ready to go. “

The Bartlesville Bruins men's basketball teams had their first regular season games last night against the Union Redhawks. In the first game, Junior Varsity came out fighting. The Bruins were shooting three pointers all night long. That is what got them to a 21-15 lead over Union by halftime. An absolutely phenomenal start for the JV team. However, in the 2nd half, Union wanted to get on top for the first time in the game. The Redhawks defense held up and got them the lead in the 4th period, 42-38. Unfortunately, the Bruins were unable to take the lead back in a nailbiter of a game and ended up losing to the Redhawks, 42-40.

The Varsity game, that was played not much later after the JV game, however was not a nailbiter. In just the first period, Union put up 23 points on the Bruins. Bartlesville was unable to keep up with the Redhawks after that because they were outmatched. From fast break dunks, to deep threes and unbelievable blocks by their 7’2 center, Erik Madrid, the Bruins were blown out. It’s an unfortunate ending to their season starter, but a definite learning curve not just for the team but for the coaches too.The final score was 67-27.
