Matter, Energy, and Sound
(4 Grade Review)
Matter is easily defined as anything that takes up space and was weight (mass).
Energy is defined as causing matter to change and/or move.
Density of matter is the amount of matter in a space. The more matter in a space, the denser it is. The less matter in a space, the less dense it it.
Matter Examples
Energy Examples
Chemical Energy is defined as matter that contains energy to be used. Wood, coal, paper, gasoline, and oil have the physical properties of matter. When the chemical energy is released from the matter it results in a change in the matter and a change the chemical energy to other forms of energy.
Wood (Chemical Energy) => Heat (Energy) + Light (Energy) + Ash (Matter)
Below is a Mind Map to a Question posed to students in class with one possible solution shown. It concerned two different guitars that have stings of plastic or metal (different types of matter and densities). This was an open ended question. Three solutions were possible by the student as long as the student identified the relevant facts to support their solution as to whose instrument would make a higher note.
The background knowledge was renewed through student experiments using tuning-forks, elastic string instruments, reed instruments, and xylophone bars (of different lengths and materials).
