Igneous Rocks are the 1st rock family.
They are formed from molten rock that cools and crystallizes into solid rock.
Molten rock found underground is termed Magma wheras molten rock that reaches the surface of the Earth is termed Lava.
Igneous Rocks and minerals form through the same process. A mineral has a specific chemical makeup and crystaline shape. Igneous rocks contain two or more kinds of minerals in its makeup.
Gabbro
Make Up-Contains minerals : Pyroxine and Olivine.
Formation-Magma cools slowly to produce large mineral crystals in the rock.
Granite
Make Up-Contains minerals : Feldspar, Mica and Quartz.
Formation-Magma cools slowly to produce large mineral crystals in the rock.
Basalt
Make Up-Contains minerals: Feldspar, Pyroxene, Olivine, and Magnetite.
Formation-Lava cools fast so minerals develop small crystals in the rock.
Obsidian
Make Up-Cools too quickly to form crystals (Not a true rock).
Formation-Lava cools and hardens very fast to produce no mineral crystals.
