Remembrance Day Service
LAB held a poignant Remembrance Day service in Academy Square, bringing our Year 7 community together to reflect on themes of service, sacrifice and peace.
A special welcome to our chair of governors, Mr Blakebrough, who also joined us for the occasion.
As part of the service, four Year 11 students delivered a powerful selection of poems and readings that captured the spirit of remembrance:
Calin (11A): For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon.
India (11F): Just a Common Soldier by
A. Lawrence Vaincourt.
Kitty (11C): Flowers Grow in Fields So Green
by Chris Duggan.
Faith (11D): For in their memory our future lasts by Sid Pankhurst.
After the readings, we observed a solemn two-minute silence, offering a moment to pause, reflect, and honour those who have been lost to war. This was followed by a moving performance of The Last Post by Paul (10A), played with great skill and sensitivity on the trumpet.
To further mark this important occasion, we created a special poppy display to honour those who served and sacrificed in times of war. This collaborative tribute invites every student to contribute a poppy, each carrying a personal message.
Year 7 24-Hour Outdoor Residential Visit to Cuffley Active Learning Centre
From Thursday 18th to Friday 19th September, our Year 7 students took part in a 24-hour outdoor residential at the Cuffley Active Learning Centre.
This was a fantastic opportunity for students to spend time in the woods, take part in a wide range of activities, enjoy a campfire, and bond as a year group. The trip provided a memorable start to their journey at LAB, helping them to build friendships and develop confidence in a new environment.
“We did woodcraft, explored, worked as teams and challenged ourselves in ways that really brought us together.”
“Everyone looked out for one another and it made me feel part of something really special.”
“This trip included many activities like: Shelter building, Camouflage and concealment and of course making s’mores on a campfire. I really enjoyed this trip and if you get to come I’m sure you will feel the same.”
“What I loved most was how the camp helped us to make friends. Our colleges were mixed so we could get to know each other better, and it meant that when we came back to school we already felt like a strong community.”
The campfire songs, laughter and shared experiences created lasting memories, while the skills developed will continue to support students throughout their time at LAB.
World Human Rights Day - IB Individuals and Societies Guest Speaker
As part of World Human Rights Day celebrated on the 10th of December, IB students in Year 13 who study subjects within the Individuals and Societies faculty (Geography, History, Psychology and Global Politics) were joined by a guest speaker Ms. Seema Joshi the Director of Legal Strategy at Accountability Coordinator.
Seema has 25 years of experience working within corporate accountability from the legal, human rights, environment and climate perspectives.
Previously, Seema held director-level positions at leading not-for-profit organisations, including overseeing Stand.earth’s Fashion and IT campaign, Amnesty International’s global Business and Human Rights work, and six climate campaigns while at Global Witness.
Seema also worked for the United Nations based in Bangkok, where she implemented a regional environmental governance programme, and practiced as a lawyer in Canada. She holds a Master’s in International Law, Bachelor of Laws (JD equivalent), and Bachelor of Arts, as well as various board and advisory level positions.
Seema held what she warmly referred to as a fireside forum, following a short introduction students were invited to ask questions which they prepared themselves. Students were enthusiastic and engaged in the discussions touching on a wide range of issues linked to human rights.
This visit is an invaluable opportunity for IB I&S students to get real world interactions with professionals who work to protect human dignity and helps students recognise their own role in creating a fairer world. It fosters empathy, awareness, and social responsibility. This speaker bridged the gap between education and action, showing students that human rights is not just a topic to study but a field where they can make a difference.
