What is Personal Development (PD)?
At LAB, our PD curriculum comprises:
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health & Economic)
Sex & Relationships Education (SRE)
Careers education
This content is primarily delivered through assemblies, by tutors during pastoral time, and during LAB Learner lessons for KS3.
Looking back on Module 2
We have had a wide range of assemblies, including external visitors joining us for some of the assemblies. We have covered a wide range of important topics which the students have engaged with well.
Student Government
The school’s Student Government has met each week this module where students have had the opportunity to raise motions about what they feel should happen in the school or a wider political issue. For example, after a session-long discussion, the student government voted in favour of adding nets to the football goals in the MUGA on the basis that it would reduce damage to the fences behind them. The student government agreed that it would be necessary to organise a fundraiser to pay for this. The maturity that the students have shown has been impressive. During discussions, members also often refer to points from their classmates, reflecting the importance of their role.
Charity work
Homestart is a Greenwich charity which provides an extensive range of support to pregnant women, children aged 0-5 and their parents and carers. We have chosen to work with Homestart again this year to continue to support local families. We had a non-uniform day, with a focus on wearing Orange & Purple (Homestart’s colours) and students brought in items for our Foodbank collection.
Clubs and Societies
The culture of clubs and societies here at LAB remains ever strong, students enjoying making new friends, meeting new teachers and being welcomed into new communities.
This term has seen a fantastically wide and diverse range of clubs on offer. Over 330 students have attended at least one club this term, with many children attending multiple clubs per week! Over 100 students have attended at least 10 hours of clubs.
Our Year 7 students in particular have got stuck in learning new skills. Over 17 students have attended AV (Audio Visual) club, over 50 at girls and boys football combined, and over 40 will be part of our upcoming musical.
Students from these extra-curricular clubs have represented our school in a number of fixtures including in Netball, Football and Badminton.
Over 90 students are also working hard to prepare for our 5th School Musical - Grease! Tickets will go on sale in the New Year for our shows playing 4th-6th March.
Below you will see a reminder of all the clubs and societies that were offered in Module 1&2. The timetable for Module 3&4 will be available in LAB Weekly on Friday 19th December.
Looking ahead to Module 3
Topics covered in the PD programme over the next term are outlined below. This programme is designed to provide students with the tools and knowledge to navigate important aspects of their personal growth, health, relationships, and future careers in a supportive and engaging way.
This module, our focus is on Careers and Digital Literacy. Students will learn age relevant skills during tutor time and throughout assemblies and in-school events. Hopefully, there will be some interesting discussions at home in regard to Careers so we have provided useful links and parental tools that complement these topics. We hope these resources will prove informative for parents and carers and can support conversations at home.
