The Bakken Museum

I definitely have worked hard on creating space for kids to have big feelings about failure. Actually another thing that I'm working on incorporating into regular practice that I saw a kid write down two weeks ago was a note to herself that said: 'Sometimes it feels like you are the only person who ever fails at anything, but other people just hide it better’. OUR WORKING DEFINITION OF FAILURE: When experiences or emotions do not follow expectations.

Data Collection Programs

The Bakken Museum conducted their PD Cycle with a week-long summer camp for students aged 8-14 - Camp Innovation. Over the course of the week students work to design and build their own personal projects using the tools and materials available in the student makerspace. Camper learn about the innovation process and practice skills of innovators like problem solving, iterating, and practical skills like learning new tools and techniques in the makerspace.

Lessons Learned

The biggest thing that I've been finding useful with the whole community of practice in general is the communication with other people doing the same thing and building off others' experiences. Especially trying to do this sort of research activity and not having to do it from scratch on our own, but being able to share and bounce ideas off other people is nice.  (Year 2 Lead FiM Facilitators)
