What to Expect from an EEG Visit

Here is a walkthrough of a typical research visit with the Early Neurocognitive Development (ENCoDe) Team

Pictured here is the main entrance to the Science 4 building.

Where is the ENCoDe lab?

The ENCoDe Lab is located on the ground floor of the Science 4 building within the Binghamton University campus. On the day of a scheduled appointment, we meet parents at the parking spot reserved for research participants in Lot C. During the appointment scheduling process, detailed directions are provided so parents may easily find the meet up point.

Here is how the ENCoDe waiting room looks like

Upon arrival to the ENCoDe lab we will walk you through the study goals and procedures and parents are asked to sign the informed consent form to participate in our research study. While this is happening, we get to know and play with your child. We have a lot of fun toys but bubbles are our favorite.

First thing first!

At this point we are ready for some head measurements. With the help of a tailor ruler, we will be measuring your child’s head circumference to ensure that we use the correct size among several EEG hats we have available.

And…ACTION!

We now walk you and your little one to the red crayon room, where the EEG study takes action. While your child is sitting on your lap, we will put the EEG hat on your child’s head. It goes on very easily but requires some adjustment to ensure a perfect fit. Also, we put on little patches on your child’s chest to monitor their heart rate. No worries, we will keep having fun with some bubbles!

Look at our little scientist in action!

What is that on the screen?

It’s time to look at some fun pictures and videos. You and your kid will be in front of a screen showing some pictures and videos. It’s pretty easy, just chill and watch at what is presented on the screen for about 10 minutes.

Say cheeeese!

Nice job! Before moving on to the next step, we snap a few pictures of this funny hat. It is too cute to go unnoticed and, let’s be honest, we want to play with more bubbles!

Time for the GPS – aka the ENCoDe spaceship

We are now getting ready for a ride on the ENCoDe spaceship. You and your kid are walked to the purple crayon room with the Godesic Photogrammetry System (GPS). We know it’s a weird name, this is why we like to call it ENCoDe spaceship. Here we take pictures all around your kid’s head so that we can see in 3D all the little buttons on the head. It’s rocket science!

All done!

You and your kid did an amazing job! Your help was memorable, and we cannot thank you enough. We hope you and your little one made some great memories with the ENCoDe Team!
