Information for Parents about Theatre Arts
Theatre Arts is more than fun and games! A Theatre Arts student will leave the program being more confident and able to speak and present in public without fear. Students learn problem solving skills and independence. They work as a team while developing self-control, empathy and compassion. Theatre Arts students actually create art through stage design, set and lighting design, costuming, makeup and performance. Theatre Arts is a place where everyone is accepted and differences are celebrated.
Theatre Arts is a *performance based* class. All students are expected to actively participate in class on a daily basis. Students will be expected to participate in a variety of activities in class including (but not limited to) games, discussions, performances, assessment (of peers and self), written responses, audience etiquette, and group activities. Being a member of a Theatre Arts class means being expected to participate! We work hard and we play hard.
For any 7th or 8th grade student taking Theatre for the first time. This is an introduction level class. Students will get a taste of many different areas within the Theatre.
For any 8th grade student taking Theatre for the second time. This is an intermediate level class. This class will dig deeper into many areas of theatre.
Isn’t Theatre Arts frivolous? Is there really any skill involved?
Students in performing arts often score well above the average student on standardized tests such as the SAT. Theatre Arts teaches reading comprehension, verbal and non-verbal communication skills using higher order thinking skills such as analysis, reasoning and conceptualization. These skills benefit anyone no matter what industry they work in or what career they choose.
Can students do Theatre Arts and also be in sports or cheer?
Of course! Intermidate/Middle school is a great place to try out many different activities. The Theatre Arts schedule works with all other school activities.
What if my student can’t decide which elective to take?
Students should always choose their elective based on their greatest interest. All of the electives taught are challenging and fun. You can’t go wrong!
Are there after school practices in Theatre Arts?
Students in Theatre Arts class are INVITED, but never required to audition for one of the plays on the main stage. After school rehearsals are only for students who are in the plays. All other performances are in class and will be rehearsed in class.
What is the cost for Theatre Arts?
There is no fee for Theatre Arts.
If my student is shy, is Theatre Arts right for them?
Absolutely. Many students are shy when they begin. Theatre is taught in a fun and easy going manner. Theatre Arts is the perfect place to build lasting friendships and gain confidence through teamwork and collaboration.
