Week 11: 10/16
Monday -
In Class: Students received new seating assignments. Students were informed of new bathroom policy (each student gets 2 bathroom passes/quarter to be used for emergencies). Went over lockdown procedures. Students took teacher-led notes on the board and copied chart at the end of Ch.8.1 (PowerPoint Slide #7)
Homework: Read Ch. 8.1
Tuesday -
1st period In Class: Went over single, double, and triple bonding of covalent bonds. Gave in-class practice worksheet. (Put red stars on papers of students who were focused and working on their assignment diligently). We will finish the backside of this worksheet later in the week.
3rd, 6th & 7th period In Class: Went over single, double, and triple bonding of covalent bonds. Gave in-class practice worksheet. (Put red stars on papers of students who were focused and working on their assignment diligently). We will finish the backside of this worksheet later in the week. Also completed a worksheet practicing identifying Ionic vs. Covalent compounds and calculating the # of atoms in a compound.
Homework all periods: Read Ch. 8.2
Wednesday/Thursday -
1st period In Class: Bellwork was a worksheet to help identify Ionic and Covalent compounds and calculate the # of atoms in a compound. We reviewed Tuesday's lesson and also discussed compounds with charges. We practiced writing electron dot structures for compounds.
1st period Homework: Covalent Bonding & E- Dot Structure Worksheet
3rd period In Class: We reviewed Tuesday's lesson and also discussed compounds with charges. We practiced writing electron dot structures for compounds by completing the 'Covalent Bonding & E- Dot Structure Worksheet'. We defined all vocabulary terms in section 8.4. Students had in-class time to work on homework.
3rd period Homework: Read Ch. 8.4 and complete 8.4 Lesson Check Questions #31-35. Complete Polarity Worksheet.
7th period In Class Wednesday: We reviewed Tuesday's lesson and also discussed compounds with charges. We practiced writing electron dot structures for compounds and started working on the 'Covalent Bonding & E- Dot Structure Worksheet'.
7th period Homework Wednesday: Finish Covalent Bonding & E- Dot Structure Worksheet
7th period In Class Thursday: We reviewed electron dot structures via Bellwork and Homework. Took notes on electronegativity--handed out periodic table with electronegativity values. Completed the 'Electronegativity and Bond Type' Worksheet.
7th period Homework Thursday: Polarity Worksheet
Friday -
In Class: Covered Electronegativity, polar/non-polar covalent bonds more in-depth. Worked on the 'Electronegativity and Bond Type' worksheet and 'Calculating Bond Polarity Worksheets'.
Homework: 'Electronegativity and Bond Type' worksheet and the 'Calculating Bond Polarity' Worksheet. (if not finished in class)
Rules for drawing Covalent Electron Dot Structures
Calculate how many total valence electrons are needed for your structure
Put single bonds connecting the central atom to your other atoms (connect all the atoms with single bonds).
Fill in the octets of your outer atoms first, then fill in your central atom
Check to see if all atoms have a stable, full octet
If an atom does not have a full octet rearrange the electrons to make all atoms have a full octet.
**Some molecules do not have a full 8 octet for each atom. Some molecules have less and some have more. You will only need to be able to do the structures that have full octets**
