The Périgord is found in the southwest (Aquitaine) region of France, and has the beautiful Dordogne river running through it. Perhaps you have seen the movie, Chocolat, with Johnny Depp? If so, you have already seen much of this picturesque area, with its tiny villages and beautiful river.
This area of France has over 1000 castles, some of which are still privately owned! It is also known for its cuisine, which boasts truffles (the mushroom kind that are hunted by dogs or pigs and are in the ground, not the chocolate kind!), foie gras (duck or goose liver), cèpe mushrooms, strawberries and walnuts. And finally, you can explore prehistoric caves and paintings, as well as deep grottos down below!
