31/10/19 - Today was our groups main day for filming our short film, 'The Gloaming'. My job, as mentioned before, was camera operator. I was in charge of framing the shot, making sure that exposure, lighting and positioning were all perfect for the desired effect.
I began my morning by gathering the equipment we would need. This included the lights, their stands and either the Sony PXW-FS7 or the Sony PXW-FS5 depending on which one we were going to use.
We then proceeded to begin filming. One challenge that we encountered was that we needed to make 2 locations appear as if they were 1 location. This meant we had to pay close attention to the frame to make sure there wasn't any discontinuities or areas that would give away the location change. I developed a lot from this challenge and it informed me of how I would work around this problem if we were to encounter it in the future.
The next challenge that we faced when filming was working in a small space with a lot of equipment. As a team, we came to the conclusion that hand-held camera work would be best in this situation as it would provide more room and make transitioning between shots easier. This also allowed me, and the camera team, to progress our teamwork skills as we had to communicate to each other constantly; when we needed the focus pulling, help holding camera or switching jobs.
I found this hands-on experience really informative and useful. I was able to put theory into practise and experience the work of a camera man. I learnt how to shoot various shots, including dutch angles and close-ups and how to achieve the desired focus/ exposure.
Reflecting on feedback that was provided from my team and from myself, I felt like we could have experimented with the shots a bit more, pushing the limits so that we can learn and develop the most out of the time we had. I would have liked to vary the lighting and exposure a bit more as I felt it was very similar throughout and not very exciting.
Overall, I learnt a lot and I felt like we worked really well as a team. We communicated to each other, discussed the problems and work through them as a unit. We shared the role of camera man efficiently and apprehensively, helping each other when needed and providing advice to keep the production running.
