28/10/19 - Today was the first day of the five day production process for the two films that will be made in the group and fulfilled much of criteria 4.
In the beginning of the session, we began by looking at the general process that one would go through when creating a film. Looking at the development process, then pre-production, production, post-production and exhibition. The current session falling into the development category as we progressed to learn technical skills.
When we went into the neighboring room, we began to learn about more advanced cameras, starting with focus. In this area, I learnt about the focusing wheel on the lens and how you look for red peaking to know you've found the best focus. This also included the magnify aspect, increasing the zoom so you are able to look more closely for the peaking.
We then learn about exposure. I learnt about gain (ISO), and how to use it to amplify the light that's in the shot to create the best effect. This also included ND filters which almost act as sunglasses for the camera; used outside to soften the light exposure. We looked into more detail about how the iris effects the exposure, when it's bigger (1.6) it lets in more light than when its smaller (19).
We then learnt about the Rule of three. This is where the frame is split into a grid, focusing the subject in focal points that make the shot effective.
Even though I had an understanding of the shot types, I learnt more specific details about them e.g. how a close-up begins at the neck and ends above the head.
In the afternoon, we put what we learnt into practise focusing on a 5 shot sequence.
This really helped me to fully understand what we have been taught, not to mention learning about new focus skills such as focus pulling. I really enjoyed doing this, especially working with higher end cameras.
While doing this activity, we worked in groups to create a very short film. I enjoyed this, it helped me to develop my team work skills and make the experience the best it could be. I feel like we worked effectively as a team, helping each other when needed.
