What did PREP 2018 and 2019 think of...
"Provides well structured lectures and explains all the concepts in detail. Best math professor so far " - Daniel, Team Emerald, PREP 2019
"A great Professor that I genuinely felt cared about his students, their performance in the class, and overall well-being. " - Chernelle, Team Emerald, PREP 2019
"Great lecturer and is all about helping his students. He has extensive office hours and great materials that he provides for you." - Connor, Team Ruby, PREP 2018
"Paulin was one of the best Professors ever super great and lecturing and always had great notes." - Athena, Team Diamond, PREP 2018
"Fair exams, no tricks were pulled and was very approachable." - Gissell, Team Diamond, PREP 2018
"best math professor here " - Jacky, Team Ruby, PREP 2018
"A great lecturer and even greater accent" - Kaye, Team Ruby, PREP 2018
"He’s amazing " - Ethelbert, Team Emerald, PREP 2018
"He’s awesome, take him if possible. Best math professor, take him if possible " - Cristian, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Professor Paulin is really an amazing teacher for this course! His explanations are theoretically relevant and interesting in general to listen to. Always attend lecture. If you do, you’ll find yourself always on top of your studies for this class. " - Christian, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Professor was very articulate during lecture and was always willing to answer questions. Paulin was also very personable and came off as someone with a personality, rather than a robot." - Natalie, Team Diamond, PREP 2018
"Nice, good depth in teaching " - Uriel, Team Ruby, PREP 2018
"Really good at explaining and helping students if they are stuck " - Aylin, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"His lecture style makes sure we understand the concepts and underlying questions that we want to solve with the particular math skill that he will be teaching before we dive into what the skill is and how we should use it. " - Shotaro, Team Diamond, PREP 2019
"I had Paulin for Math 1A and 1B and absolutely loved him! He explains topics clearly and is eager to answer questions. His exams are a little bit tricky but not unfair. Paulin is very accommodating. After switching online halfway through the semester, he did everything he could to make the class manageable." - Arianna, Team Sapphire, PREP 2019
"Great lecturer, gives a lot of practice exams, great during office hours, homework is reasonable. Won’t throw curve balls on exams (and the hw/practice exams help you know what to expect). Good to have him for 1A and 1B as he seamlessly starts off from last semesters material." - Ian, Team Emerald, PREP 2018
"I would look forward to Professor Paulin's lectures! He gives a general exposition to introduce every topic, describes concepts in a high level of detail, and goes over well chosen examples that highlight important subtleties and emphasize specifics. He cares a great deal about his students and holds office hours every day of the week. His exams are comprehensive and difficult, but not unfair. Grading is also generous. All in all, a great professor and one that doesn't make math boring! Professor Paulin teaches both his 1A and 1B courses in the exact same manner. No complaints from me for either course! " - Roberto, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"I thought Professor Paulin was the perfect professor to get me transitioned into Berkeley mathematics and the expectations Berkeley and Engineering has for us. Although his class was challenging, it helped me prepare for Math 1B next semester. In addition, Paulin was an approachable professor and made math fun with his goofy self during lecture. Again, Professor Paulin was the best professor, and his enthusiasm made me fall in love with Math 1B. " - Carolina, Team Diamond, PREP 2018
"I found this professor Paulin Math 1B class to be even more enjoyable than Math 1A, which I took with a different professor. He really cares about his students and their learning in a way that makes the class even more engaging and enjoyable. His class structure is very straightforward and easy to adjust to. His midterms are reasonable and cover, in its majority, what has been covered in class/discussions. He is also really easy to approach to and ask questions. " - Valeria, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Fair tests and assignments, but not the most engaging or interesting lecturer. " - Connor, Team Ruby, PREP 2018
"New at Teaching, needs to hone skills. Not bad, just more hard to maneuver than Paulin " - Uriel, Team Ruby, PREP 2018
"Sethian said he is no longer teaching undergrads (as of Fa18), so I'm not sure if you guys will be able to take his class or not. If he does happen to teach Math 53 again at some point, I would recommend him. He's a great lecturer and explains things really well (intuitively) - he takes time to answer people's questions and resolve confusions. Don't be scared by the bad grade average on Berkeleytime - if you pay attention, work hard, and make sure you have fundamental concepts down, you can get an A (I did).
His exams aren't the kind to make you do tons of crap arithmetic and integrals, they're difficult in the sense that they test a really deep understanding of the concepts. " - Ashley, Team Sapphire, PREP 2018
"Hw was very long, the only reason I rate not a 5 on fair was that the hw grading seemed to vary from gsi also. The class was taught very well and tests were difficult, but fair, Sethian curves the final though also. " - Andy, Team Emerald, PREP 2018
"The first exam felt about a bit harder than the standard Berkeley level exam but each exam after became fairly easy. That did mean the curve was high! Also, her lectures were decent but definitely required student pre-reading to be effective " - Alvaro, Team Sapphire, PREP 2019
"The textbook was a better teacher " - Anonymous, Team Emerald, PREP 2018
"Went mostly straight out of the book and felt as if only got into the surface level understanding of the course. Tests problems compared to quiz and hw problems felt completely different. " - Monet, Team Emerald, PREP 2018
"Terrible lecturer, could not understand the material through him at all. However, his exams are comparatively easier than most other professors (higher averages). The only thing he curves is the grade ranges (i.e. 85 and up is an A, 70 and up is a B, etc) " - Tyler, Team Ruby, PREP 2018
"Very nice; always welcoming. Speaks Spanish. Lectures are based on his notes. Tests and exams are pretty fair. As long as you study and do the textbook problems, you should be fine. " - Edgar, Team Sapphire, PREP 2018
"The prof is very good but his class is very fast-paced. Make sure to read on the lecture before the lecture so you aren’t very lost." - Kevin, Team Diamond, PREP 2018
"His lectures can go a little fast, but I like how he uploaded the lecture notes a couple days before the lecture, which were pretty comprehensive; that way I could study the notes and keep up with the professor. His exams are fair game, sometimes tricky." - Tyler, Team Ruby, PREP 2018
"The professor goes pretty fast during lecture but posts the notes online before every class. It’s probably best to just have the notes copied down before the class so you don’t get lost trying to copy the notes on the projector. He’s super helpful and holds office hours immediately after class. " - Daniel, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Emiliano is a great guy but the class was a horror show. If you have another option, take jt! " - Julian, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"The class was needlessly difficult, not because of the content but because of the way Christ taught the content. One time, he spent a whole lecture working out a problem and only at the very end did he realize that he had somehow combined two problems and was working them out together. The class was supposed to be curved, but I’m not even sure he applied the curve at the end of the semester. " - Yailin, Team Sapphire, PREP 2018
"Nice, witty guy. Makes jokes occasionally and teaches material well. Only teaches topics that are going to be on exams and his lectures are straight forward. Lectures at 8 am were tough so I rarely went. However, he posted lecture notes online and going to my gsi's office hours allowed me to do well. " - Monet, Team Emerald, PREP 2018
"Good lecturer. Makes occasional jokes, which make the lectures more interesting. Also, good at explaining. " - Edgar, Team Sapphire, PREP 2018
"Professor Zworski was highly entertaining during lecture with witty commentary and an engaging teaching style. Despite this, Zworski would often lose a lot of people during lecture just due to the difficulty to visualize certain subject matter, however, he made his best attempt to aid in the visualization. " - Natalie, Team Diamond, PREP 2018
"He didn’t really lecture well it was his first year, tests did not reflect homework assignment or lectures " - Farhiya, Team Sapphire, PREP 2019
"Wood is straightforward with his teaching style and homework/tests. His teaching style is a little scattered but overall still a good professor for this class. " - Christian, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Prof. Simon is a great lecturer. His exams and lectures are based from the textbook so it is good to read ahead to ask questions in lecture. He has a french accent and it is not thick, so you understand him clearly. " - Alex, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Very relaxed teaching style. Mostly works off of a blackboard. It helps tremendously to have a good gsi. Tests are easy to predict. " - Julian, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Explains the material well but sometimes requires you to just know certain identities without really proving them first. " - Daniel, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"He prefers research over lecturing, he is not as enthusiastic about teaching. His exams are fairly straight forward. He does not go off the textbook and I left each lecture feeling more confused than necessary. Don't recommend him at all. " - Alex, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"She was a graduate student teaching Pre-Calculus. Half of the time I had no idea what she was covering in lecture. I found that she derived formulas in lecture and worked on practice problems which didn't help too much when it came to homework. The first couple of weeks we covered inequalities and absolute values which she explained very complicatedly. To avoid being confused the majority of the time I HIGHLY recommend taking the adjunct course for Math 32 which is offered by the SLC. We didn't get to see Trig until the last couple weeks of the semester. But she is very willing to help you and better explain some concepts during her office hours. Her office hours were typically mostly empty so you will most likely get help on any questions you may need help on. " - Ofelia, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Mina is a physics professor and was only available for office hours if you emailed her and the purpose would have to be because you weren't able to get an answer from you GSI or other tutoring services. She was VERY willing to answer questions during and after lecture if you were confused or had questions. There were times in lecture that I was confused on, so I once again recommend taking the adjunct course for this class. She at a very low pace and didn't cover enough material that is needed to prepare you for Math 1B. She also says "umm" a lot when lecturing and gets lost with where she is in her notes when teaching the class. " - Ofelia, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
"Lectures can be confusing, but tests are fair. You learn everything from your GSI in discussion. " - Kaitlyn, Team Ruby, PREP 2019
