The journey of learning Mam with Sofia is structured into a Foundations lessons and then 5 sections. Start with the foundations lesson – this is an overview of how to write and read in Mam, how to make the sounds, and some grammar basics. Then, Sofia's stories follows in time with the order of the lessons, but you can learn and practice with them out of order if you wish. Click on the title or image for each lesson to go to that page.

In this preliminary lesson, you'll learn the Mam alphabet, how to pronounce the sounds of Mam, and a brief overview of the grammar.
Today, we will learn about Sofia’s first day in San Juan Atitán. On the first day, Sofia arrives at her Aunt Andrea’s house. Aunt Andrea is very happy because Sofia has returned to her homeland. Aunt Andrea greets Sofia in Mam and shows her everything inside and outside the house and the pets.

Today is Sophia's second day in San Juan Atitán. She is excited because she is going downtown with her aunt Andrea where she will see everything there is downtown. Also, Sophia will practice speaking Mam. Sophia doesn’t know but her aunt Andrea wants introduce a new person to her, a guy who’s name is Juan. This is the first time Sophia is going to meet a new person by only speaking Mam.
Today is Sofia's third day in San Juan Atitán. She is very excited because she is learning and seeing new things. In section 3, Sofia will learn about a beautiful, pretty place that has great significance for the people of San Juan Atitán. This place is called “Ttzi Tal Tze” (it is a vegetation area and a protected area of the municipality, and its name in English means "at the edge of the trees" or literally translated, "at the mouth of the trees"). Sofia will learn about the things in Ttzi Tal Tze, how to get there, how to make conversation along the way, and how to follow directions. Sofia will not go to the place alone; she will be accompanied by her aunt Andrea and John, a man originally from the area who lives there.
In this section, Sofia will go to the market with her Aunt Ley. She will learn while walking through the San Juan Atitán market. At the market, she will also learn how to ask for and inquire about things she finds, including prices and quantities. She will also learn about numbers and fruits and vegetables. Upon returning home, Sofia will learn how to cook local dishes and learn about conversations that take place while cooking. After finishing cooking, Sofia will learn phrases used to order food and how to exchange rules of courtesy during the meal. During these activities, she will be accompanied by two other women named Maria and Juana.
In this final section, Sofia will observe and learn about the importance and significance of the temazcal (sauna/bath) for the inhabitants of San Juan Atitán. She will also learn about phrases exchanged during the preparation of the temazcal. Sofia will learn about weaving, the daily work of women, and understand the materials used in weaving, threads, colors, shapes, and the knowledge and identity that goes into weaving. Having finished her lessons, Sofia will return to the United States. In the coming days, both Sofia and Ley will be sad because they will no longer be learning, but they agreed to communicate through social media.
