Sophia's Story
In this learning resource, we learn about a girl named Sophia who lives in Oakland, California. Her parents were born in San Juan Atitán, Huehuetenango and have been living in Oakland for 16 years. Sophia was also born in San Juan Atitán, Huehuetenango but she migrated with her parents when she was 2 years old.
Now Sophia is 18 years old. She is about to enter college, has just graduated from High School in Oakland, and in her spare time she works as a waitress in a restaurant. Sophia has not visited San Juan since she migrated. She has always heard her parents talk about San Juan, however, she has only seen San Juan in photos and videos on Facebook. Now Sophia will visit her homeland for the first time. And she is very excited to meet people and practice with her Mam.
Sofia grew up speaking Mam with her parents at home. Then she entered a bilingual school and began to learn English and Spanish. Since there is a lot of pressure to speak Spanish and English, she now finds it difficult to speak in Mam, although she still understands a bit of the language.

Ahora Sofía tiene 18 años. Ella está a punto de entrar a la universidad, acaba de graduarse de la High School en Oakland, y en su tiempo libre trabaja como mesera en un restaurante. Sofía no ha visitado San Juan desde que migró. Siempre ha escuchado a sus padres hablar de San Juan, sin embargo, ella solo ha visto San Juan en fotos y videos en Facebook. Ahora Sofía visitará por primera vez su tierra natal. Y ella está muy emocionada de conocer y practicar a su mam.
Sofía creció hablando Mam con sus padres en la casa. Después entró a una escuela bilingüe y empezó a aprender inglés e español. Dado que hay mucha presión de hablar español e inglés, ahora se le dificulta hablar en Mam, aunque todavía entiende el idioma.
