Applied Human Biology is about real life medical science situations. This is the course for you if you enjoy working independently and if you want to study Biology without having to cover too much mathematics or chemistry like in Biology A Level.
In Year 12, you will study Units 1 (Principles of Applied Human Biology) and Unit 2 (Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases). In Year 13 you will study Unit 3 (Human Biology and Health Issues) and Unit 7 (Biomedical Science). In unit 1, you will study how human bodies work at a genetic, cellular and tissue level, gaining an understanding of how human biology and lifestyle factors interact to affect health. You will also learn about diagnostic techniques to improve health outcomes. In Unit 2, you will carry out you brown investigation into the effect of antimicrobial agents on the growth of microbes and you will learn about disease management. For Unit 3, you will research the impact of health initiatives, including their potential advantages and disadvantages. For Unit 7, you will concentrate on biomedical science, including haematology (blood), histology/cytology (cells) and biochemical balance.
