Top Notes is BIS’s premier concert choir, bringing together students who are passionate about singing and committed to achieving a high standard of musical excellence. While no formal audition is required to join, membership is based on a willingness to commit fully to the choir for the entire school year.
Students are expected to demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic, including regular attendance at rehearsals and independent practice at home or during free time at school.
Rehearsals
Top Notes rehearses every Wednesday afternoon from 3:15–4:30 pm in the BIS Music Room. Rehearsals are led by Ms Helene Piper (M.Mus.Ed, Contemporary Choral Conduction, 2006). From time to time, the choir also benefits from specialist workshops with Ms Elise Bradley, a leading choral educator from Takapuna Grammar School.
Performances
The choir performs regularly at key school events, including the annual concert evening and end-of-year prize-giving ceremonies. Top Notes also competes in the national choral competition The Kids Sing, where the choir was awarded a Bronze Award in 2024.
Musical Expectations
The Top Notes repertoire is challenging and musically rich, often featuring three- and four-part harmonies and complex arrangements.
Students are expected to practise independently to support ensemble progress and maintain performance standards.
Some singers may be invited to perform solo or small-group parts, with auditions held when appropriate.
Commitment
Students may attend one trial rehearsal before confirming their place. Once enrolled, members commit to Top Notes for the full school year and are expected to attend rehearsals consistently, arrive on time, and engage fully in both rehearsals and performances.
For students seeking a serious, rewarding musical challenge, Top Notes offers the opportunity to perform at a high level while being part of a focused, supportive, and talented choral community.
