Music classes for everyone!
Students receive weekly double lessons in Performing Arts as part of a nine-week module in Year 7 and a full-term module in Year 8. Music teaching during these modules is carefully sequenced to develop practical skills, musical understanding, creativity, and cultural awareness.
The programme includes five interconnected disciplines:
Ukulele
Students learn to play four-chord progressions using combinations of C, G, Am, and F, building a strong foundation for accompaniment and songwriting.
Music Theory
Students develop skills in reading and writing rhythm and pitch, supporting both their practical playing and compositional work.
Music History
Students explore music from different times and cultures, with a focus on classical (European), modern (North American), and Māori (Aotearoa New Zealand) musical traditions, including an introduction to the instruments associated with each genre.
Songwriting
Students learn how to create their own music by combining four-chord ukulele progressions with their growing knowledge of music theory, structure, and style.
Groove Lab
Groove Lab brings rhythm learning into a physical, embodied space. Students use their bodies as instruments through clapping, movement, and percussion-based activities. This work reinforces the difference between beat and rhythm, deepens rhythmic understanding, and helps students internalise musical concepts in a highly engaging way.
The nine weekly music lessons are shared below to support students who may have been away from school and to provide insight into what has been covered in class. These slides are updated each term to reflect the specific classes and modules being taught.
