Freshman students have been focusing on building their critical reading skills by reading, analyzing, and evaluating nonfiction writing. Students engaged in activities that helped them build strategies for determining the author's purpose, distinguishing between fact and opinion, and determining the validity and reliability of nonfiction text.
Sophomore students have been focusing on sharpening their writing skills and developing their personal writing style. Through revising critical punctuation rules, students have learned to challenge themselves to use more varied and engaging sentence structures. Their writing assessments included a picture description, a journal entry, and a business letter.
Junior Advertisement Project
Junior students were tasked with creating an advertisement utilizing persuasive techniques taught in class. This group was challenged to think of a new invention, and as innovative students they delivered. Additional to this advertisement, students also advertised adventure parks, wildlife parks, a beauty salon, and a motor race track. The junior students did a fantastic job applying the information taught in class.
Senior Op-Ed pieces
Senior students were tasked with becoming free-lance writers to create an op-ed piece based on images. They were challenged with developing their own interpretation of the imagery, developing an opinion based on it, and persuading an audience of that point of view. Seniors took on the challenge by creating exceptional pieces, displaying higher-level thinking. They did an amazing job at creating an imitation of a magazine op-ed piece.
