Reading & Analyzing Fiction
Throughout February, our students have been reading and analyzing two fiction works: “The Dinner Party” and “The Story of an Hour.” Our analysis of both stories involved lively classroom discussion, as well as practice writing detailed responses to critical thinking questions. Students also learned the value of understanding the historical context of a story to fully appreciate and analyze its characters and themes.
Effective Writing: Sentence Variety & Avoiding Errors
Throughout February, our students learned how to actively evaluate their writing for optimal effectiveness. This included the practice of identifying and avoiding common errors in sentence structure, such as fragments, run-on sentences, and misplaced modifiers, as well as ensuring precise wording and sentence variety. Developing and continually practicing these skills helps students evaluate and improve their own writing.
ENGLISH PROPOSAL
This month our junior students were well engaged in drafting a proposal to find solutions to real-world problems. In order to complete this task, students needed to learn the structure of a proposal so that they can effectively apply knowledge. They simply brainstormed a problem, thought of a realistic solution to solve it, develop evidence to prove that their solution will work, and lastly make a call to action. Among many of their works were topics about online learning, sports, pollution, covid-19, vaccinations, politics, and much more. The juniors were challenged and they certainly delivered.
WORKPLACE DOCUMENT DEVELOPMENT- RÉSUMÉ
Seniors got down to business in this month’s highlights thinking of their dream jobs in order to prepare the necessary documents for their future careers. Students were put in the hot seat when they had to think of “In what career do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years?” Students did not quickly respond to the question simply because they had to really think of their response. After contemplation, I got some really good responses inclusive of entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers, photographers, lawyers, and many more. However, that was not the real challenge, students were tasked with developing their resumes to apply for their dream job. This took a lot of research and gathering of information from the start of their education to now. Even though they were placed in the hot seat, our seniors were able to professionally draft their workplace documents.
