New: Advancing Through The Ranks at BEC-TV

Starting this year we will open up new levels of growth at BEC-TV. Please know that this is in no way a competition, but a way to recognize those who have put in a lot of time and effort. And for those goal-driven sorts, this'll give you something to shoot for. We also hope that it encourages more participation, and encourages you to stretch your skills deeper and in more directions. All this is a win for you AND a win for the community who benefits from your time, passion, and expertise.

Your BEC-TV shoots/activities carry over from year to year, so each fall you pick up where right where you left off.

Do some of these numbers sound high? Remember we have 100-150 shoots and activities every year, so you'll have lots of opportunities to participate and to hone your skills.

Tech Ranks

Newbie Tech

• Fill out and submit a Tech Profile sheet
• Attend BEC-TV Basics (or get temporarily exempted from Tom)

Tech

• Complete 10 shoots
• Show Competency In:
  • Basic Camera Controls
  • Basic Camera Setup
• Complete Level 1: Beginner Skill Qualifications for each position (Moodle)

***Achieving this position gets you the opportunity to purchase your VERY OWN BEC Wear!***

Advanced Tech

• Complete 25+ shoots
  • 5 or more being sports
  • 5 or more being fine-arts or other non-sports events
• Serve 10+ hours in Operations
• Serve on a Seasonal Crew
• Show Competency In:
  • ENG Camera Controls
  • Cables & Connectors
  • Basic Troubleshooting & Labeling
• Complete Level 2: Intermediate Skill Qualifications for each position (Moodle)

Senior Tech

• Complete 50+ shoots
  • 10 or more being sports
  • 10 or more being fine-arts or other non-sports events
• Serve in a Student Leadership position for a season (Student Producer, OpTech, etc.)
• Film & Edit One-Cam Shoot
• Create your own lasting production (Intro, PSA, etc.)
• Complete Level 3: Advanced Skill Qualifications for each position (Moodle)

Tech Guru?

This position might come in the future, but it entails showing leadership & mentoring skills above all others!

For returning techs, we will work with you in the coming weeks to determine what position your past work lands you in.

Tracking Participation & Skills

This whole advancement thing is new for all of us, so there are still some parts we're locking in. We know for sure the new Google Calendar application will be part of the trick to tracking your participation here at BEC-TV, so Be Sure to sign up for shoots using that. Your responses will be exported to a spread sheet where you get your participation calculated.

Once we get the system working a bit more, you'll be able to access a log of your participation and advancement.

TechiePoints

Hey, we don't want to get in a mode where you just do things to get "points". We really want you to to the right stuff - both little things and big things - cuz its just the right thing to do, and a great way to live life. Still, it IS nice to get recognized now and then when you do what the right thing or when you go over and above.

TechiePoints are a fun way to get "extra credit" for doing things extra right. We're working on creative ways you can use these points you earn. Simple things like responding "No" for events you can't make on the shoot calendar make a HUGE difference for staff, so you'll get points for that. Other things that may get you TechiePoints may be...

• Showing extra leadership skills at a shoot
• Helping at the station
• Helping engineers
• Baking Tom homemade cookies

and so much more!
