This week in Reception, the children have been developing their understanding of number by focusing on the composition of 6, 7 and 8. We explored how these numbers can be made in different ways and began to recognise that numbers can be split and recombined into smaller parts. The children also practised finding 1 more and 1 less, helping them to build confidence with counting forwards and backwards and strengthening their understanding of number order.
We used a range of practical resources to support learning, including number trains, where the children created different combinations to make each number. This encouraged them to think carefully about how many parts were needed and to explain their thinking. The children also enjoyed using giant 10 frames, which helped them to visually represent numbers and compare quantities.
One of the highlights of the week was using blank ladybird templates and counters to show different ways of making 6, 7 and 8. The children demonstrated great creativity and enthusiasm, placing counters in different patterns and confidently talking about how many they had used. Overall, the children showed excellent engagement and are beginning to develop a strong foundation in early number sense through hands-on, meaningful activities.
