This week, Year 5 have been redrafting their character descriptions of the three hunters attacking Torak from our class novel Wolf Brother, focusing on precise vocabulary, vivid detail and improved sentence structure.
To continue our inquiry into the Stuarts and explore how the arts communicate and preserve societal narratives, the children learned about Oliver Cromwell, Charles I and the English Civil War, with a particular focus on the Battle of Maidstone. Using a combination of historical knowledge and imagination, the children wrote a diary entry from the perspective of a Royalist soldier defending Maidstone against the Parliamentarians.
This was especially engaging as the children were already familiar with local landmarks such as Gabriel’s Hill, Week Street, Penenden Heath and the Medway Bridge, helping them to ground their writing in a real historical setting. We will be redrafting next week.
