This week, Year 4 have truly demonstrated their agency as inquirers while exploring our central idea of beliefs and values. The children took ownership of their learning through a hands-on cooking day in the Studio discovering how food can reflect culture and tradition. They learnt how to make two types of traditional German flatbreads — one savoury and one sweet — starting from scratch by mixing, kneading, and shaping their own dough. After learning about traditional herbs and spices, they selected their own flavour combinations to create unique flatbreads. The savoury versions featured bacon and onion toppings, while the sweet ones were sprinkled with apple and sugar. It was lovely to see such interest and enthusiasm as they applied practical skills, cultural understanding, and lots of effort creating something to take home.
Year 4 also explored their artistic skills practising painting techniques, blending acrylics to produce stunning artwork inspired by our core text The Lost Happy Endings. Using their English writing skills, they crafted their own handwritten ‘happy endings,’ which they then cascaded in shimmering gold art pens across their paintings, adding a magical finishing touch.
To deepen their understanding of how cultures embrace health and wellbeing as part of their beliefs and values, the children took part in Japan’s Radio Taiso exercise programme before relaxing their minds and bodies with some calming Chinese Tai Chi.
Everyone has excelled and embraced so many different areas of learning this week — from art and literacy to culture and wellbeing. Year 4 are definitely ready for a well-earned rest!
