3D Pen Exploration and Design in Bolivia Elementary School’s Media Center Classes
by Sally Lewis
Exploration and design are an integral part of learning in our media center. You might see students working with Ozobots, magnetic tiles, Legos, coding mice, and many other tools. Our most recent adventure was letting students design and create their own projects using 3D pens. Students collaborated with their classmates to determine what they wanted to build. They had to draft their designs first and then move into using the pens to construct their projects. Everyone was very excited and nervous at the same time as they learned how to utilize the 3D pens. Debriefing afterwards was so rewarding and informative as students shared their successes and ah-ha moments. This was an amazing opportunity for students to utilize their problem-solving skills as they experimented with the design and creation process.
If a book, song, movie, or artwork is in the public domain, then it is not protected by intellectual property laws (copyright, trademark, or patent laws)—which means it's free for you to use without permission. As a general rule, most works enter the public domain because of old age.
You may ask, then why is Amazon still charging even for the digital copy? The producer may still charge for their costs to produce and distribute said copy, but you should see the costs greatly reduced. Amazon's latest Kindle version of The Great Gatsby is now $0.99. You can find The Great Gatsby available at for free online. Notice this is a reputable distributor of public domain texts. Many online resources are not.
