Refreshed and Renewed: New Spaces for a New Year!
by
Jeannie Timken, Director of Digital Learning and School Library Services
Last school year, three school libraries were selected for an update - furniture, paint, carpet - the works! Before the school year ended, two more school libraries were added to the refresh list. When staff and students returned to North Brunswick High School, Bolivia Elementary, Supply Elementary, Union Elementary and Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary - these renovated library spaces brought new energy for the start of the new year!
From our Media Coordinators...
"The students just love the new space, I think the tall tables and chairs are Grade 3-5's favorite! The benches have also been a place where students have asked to sit and read!!!"
Ms. McGougan, Supply Elementary
"The best part of our library is how it breathes now--wide open, spilling into corners that once felt crowded. The renovation gave us space that feels alive, adaptable, and ready for whatever we bring to it. One student summed it up best: 'It feels like a place made for us--not just to read, but to think, to talk, and to belong."
Mr. Murrow, North Brunswick High School
"Our space is so much more versatile now. We have a true "Makerspace", more room for books and work spaces that are more functional for both teachers and students. The change is exciting and we can't wait to see what kind of fun we will have!"
Ms. Zemp, Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary
"I love that my furniture is mobile. The students love the tall tables and that the library looks more up to date."
Ms. Robertson, Union Elementary
"The library renovations have opened up many small group areas that will allow students to work on projects and utilize all the resources the space has to offer. "
Ms. Lewis, Bolivia Elementary
BCS has worked diligently over the last several years to ensure that we are appropriately licensed. It is only fair to our vendor partners and it models ethical behavior. Clever has been integral in this process. Clever allows us to target specific schools, grade levels, subjects or students/teachers with access to specific apps.
For the most part, subscriptions are purchased for specific grade levels or buildings. For example, BrainPop Jr is only purchased and licensed for our elementary buildings. Adding teachers outside of those buildings would cause our licensing to be out of compliance. While we want every teacher to have access to the resources they need, we also have to maximize our expenditures and target resources to the appropriate grade levels and students. Some subscriptions are licensed by the specific number of teachers. Allowing teachers outside of the core need group access changes licensing distribution.
