Exciting Happenings in the Media Center
by Bethany Roberts, Southport Elementary Media Coordinator
Here at Southport Elementary Media Center, we have had so many fun things happening within our media classes. Students have been learning about Digital Awareness through lessons completed during library visits. Through these lessons, they learned about the importance of being safe online and making smart choices as digital citizens. They have also engaged in lessons with our School Counselor, where they have learned about topics such as self-control, bullying prevention, and kindness. Students have also explored some of the resources available for checkout, such as digital books through our SORA app and Playaway audiobooks, which are always a favorite!
In addition to these exciting lessons and activities, our Media Center continues to be an essential part of our school’s academic success. The library collection and learning environment foster curiosity and a love of reading, both of which directly support academic growth in every grade level. Whether students are participating in guided lessons, researching a topic of interest, collaborating on projects, or discovering new books that inspire them, the Media Center supports all aspects of their overall learning experience.
There is actually quite a bit to dissect here AND the answer maybe slightly different than it may have been a year ago. Context matters.
First, the person who bought this, not their teammate, not the person who took over the subject from them, but the actual person who paid for it, can use it in their classroom and can make copies FOR THEIR STUDENTS. Not everyone else. Where it gets complicated is in the last statement that bars transmission. Realistically, and digital format shared with others is transmission. However, the online classroom is now an extension of the traditional classroom and no one can argue that. Therefore, you can share with students in a closed classroom setting (ie. Google Classroom.) Can you put it in your Google Slides? Yes, but....you can't then share that slide with anyone who isn't a student rostered in your class.
