Lights Out in the Library
by Jennifer Coursey, Belville Elementary Media Coordinator
On a recent Friday evening at 6:00 p.m., twelve students gathered in the Belville Media Center to experience what happens when the lights go out in the library. During the fall book fair, the media center sold one-dollar raffle tickets for the opportunity to visit the library from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Six students won the chance to bring a guest and participate in an evening that included pizza, spooky stories, crafts, a scary movie, and an exploration of the school “in the dark.”
The purpose of the event was less about fundraising and more about generating enthusiasm for the library. The underlying goal is to foster a love of books and reading, which, in turn, supports academic achievement. As this small group of students learned, what happens when the lights go out in the library is a whole lot of fun!
Movies used in schools must meet Fair Use guidelines. In order to meet these, the movie must be tied directly to a content standard (no showing movies for rewards or holidays).
In addition, they must be acquired legally and preferably from a vendor with licensing rights for viewing. If a school or organization wishes to show a movie for profit, reward, or anything beyond standard instructions, licensing must be purchased from organizations like Swank.
