The Heartbeat Opera in LA will be livestreaming their song cycle "Breathing Free" to "celebrate Black artistry to convey a dream of justice, equity." Did you know that a lot of theater acting and writing techniques are used in opera? Opera writiers and composers write tell stories with song cycles--a playlist of different compositions that convey mood. The Heartbeat Opera team chose the following songs to view through the lens of our currrent Black Lives Matter movement:
Beetoven's Fidelio, African-American spirituals, songs by black composers, and lyrics by Langston Hughes and Thulani Davis.
