Survey of Music Cycle: 5
In March we celebrate Music in Our Schools Month and Women’s History Month. The purpose of Music In Our Schools Month is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. Music In Our Schools Month is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages. The lessons and activities included celebrating both Women in Music to honor Women’s History Month and Music In Our Schools Month to honor our music education.
SEL Warm Up: March is Music In Our Schools Month®, and we are celebrating with quotes from some of our close friends in the world of conducting, composition, and music education. Over the years, we have talked to many distinguished musicians, and one of the unifying topics of discussion has been the importance of music education. Now, we would like to share with you their thoughts.
Artist Focus: Marin Alsop
Conductor Marin Alsop, who is the first woman to ever lead a major symphony orchestra and a former Bernstein protégée, leads the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra rehearsing the great composer's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story ahead of #BernsteinAt100 celebrations at the Edinburgh International Festival on 25 August 2018.
Instructional Resources:
The included Google Slides presentation will teach about some of the most important female composers in the history of music. Women composers have always bucked the tides of history. They accomplished amazing work despite societal norms and patronage systems that favored men. But thanks to re-writes of history, the contributions of women artists are now being heard and written about. Make sure you click the links to listen to their music!
