09.00 – 12.00 hours, Monday – Friday (except Thai & Lao official holidays)
Visa collection hours:
13.30 – 16.00 hours, 2 days after submitting the application, e.g. Monday submission, Wednesday collection; Friday submission, Tuesday collection
Pickup is very easy and fast (around 10 minutes)
You can take an overnight bus from Chiang Mai to Nong Khai which is next to the Laos border, Friendship Bridge 1. The trip will take about 11 hours and is the cheapest option. This website is commonly used to book tickets.
When you get to Nong Khai bus station, there will be taxi's/tuktuk's that can take you to the Thai-Laos border (around a 10 minute journey) for around 100 baht.
When you arrive at the border, you will need to fill out your departure card and get stamped out of Thailand. Then, you will pay 35 baht for a bus that will take you across the bridge to the Laos side. Once you get off the bus, you must fill out a form for your entry visa.
As of July 2023, you will need to pay 1,700 baht for the Laos entry visa. You will also need 2 passport-sized photos for the application.
Extra notes:
SIM cards and Laos Kip are available at the shops when you cross through
There will be plenty of taxi's/tuktuk's around that can you into the town of Vientiane, for around 300 baht
There are flights from Chiang Mai to Vientiane, however, they are more expensive due to it being an international flight. If you want a cheaper option, you can always fly from Chiang Mai to Khon Kaen, or from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani. Once there you can take a bus or taxi to Nong Khai.
Khon Kaen to Nong Khai - About a 2 hour and 30-minute drive
Udon Thani to Nong Khai - About a 1-hour drive.
There is a visa on arrival but will have to wait in long queue at airport
OR Apply for E-Visa before leaving and make sure it’s approved:
https://laoevisa.gov.la/index
Only eligible If you are a national of one of the European Union countries, Canada, USA or Australia
Can get SIM card and exchange money at the airport
Arrive the day before your appointment
Check the estimated time at the bottom of your appointment email and come slightly before that time
If you miss your appointment you can’t apply for another 30 days
Photocopy shop at the embassy is closed. To make a copy there are people on the street nearby that offer this service
Best taxi service App: InDrive (widely used in Vientiane) or LOCA Laos Ride Hailing and Taxi (You can add an international card to avoid cash payment)
THB is widely accepted but it's better to pay in KIP for costs and to avoid confusion as your change will often be given in KIP. I used a place called Khamsy Money Changer to exchange THB to KIP and was happy with the services.

If you do not want to leave Thailand you can pay for an agent to get your Non-B at Chiang Mai Immigration office for 20,000 Baht
In order to do this you will have to have your Bachelors degree certified at you countries Embassy
Not all embassy's in Thailand offer this service and you may need someone to do it in your home country and get it certified and mailed to you
Acquiring a Non-B Visa while you are in Thailand takes about around month to process. If you are on a tourist visa that is about to expire it will mean you will have to do a border run. A border run is when you cross the border by land instead of plane to get a new tourist visa stamp for 30-60 days (depending on passport). This process can take a full day or 2 but can be done over a weekend as well.
I recommend taking the early morning bus and arriving there in the afternoon. Once you arrive to the bus station you will need to take a tuk-tuk or songtaew to the Chiang Khong Border checkpoint or Thai- Laos Friendship bridge.
According to the latest update from Thai Immigration for border run process, if you plan to arrange the visa run by yourself and have a few days visit in the country, you are required to stay out of Thailand at least 2 nights, then you will cross the border and return with a Free visa. You can then catch a bus back to Chiangmai, or you can rent a car for a more pleasant trip!
If you don't want to spend 2 nights and only have very short time to finish the procedure, we would recommend you joining Border Run Service Companies and making the trip in one day which you can find companies from google sites and will need to make prior booking, for more precise details please contact the companies directly, some companies also have 2 choices: one day trip and stay 2 nights in Laos.
