At BB&N, service learning is rooted in principled engagement, collaboration, and partnership. Our program aims to break down the barriers between public and private institutions, as well as to foster meaningful connections across the Greater Boston Area and beyond.
Benjamin Banneker School: our US students partner with BBS students for after-school activities and enrichment
Boston Medical Center Food Pantry: each February, BB&N organizes the Have-a-Heart Food Drive for patients who shop at the BMC food pantry
Cambridge Community Center: our US students have helped with CCC's Thanksgiving luncheon, after-school program, and more
Catie's Closet: in 2019, our MS students started collecting clothes for Catie's Closet
Christmas in the City: the MS collects Thanksgiving baskets for families every year
Community Cooks: our US students prepare lunches for Community Cooks during afternoons of service. In 2020, CELB also organized a monthly meal circle
Cradles to Crayons: students across all 3 campuses have organized drives and volunteered at C2C's donation center
Furnishing Hope: our US students have volunteered and interned with FH, helping families in transition turn housing into homes
Greater Boston Food Bank: students across all 3 campuses have organized drives and volunteered at GBFB
Heading Home: the MS has a longstanding relationship with HH. In 2019, MS SL Coordinator Zoe Tarshis received HH's Community Builder award
Margaret Fuller House: many US students have volunteered at MFH's food pantry and after-school program. Chef Keith Jones recently donated BB&N's pre-pandemic food supplies
Mass Audubon: US students volunteer to help clear trails, tend to goats, and promote environmental awareness.
Neville Center: MS students regularly visit and share in activities with residents
Rosie's Place: US students regularly serve meals to women needing a safe place
Watertown Boys & Girls Club: US students have volunteered to organize athletic activities and other after-school enrichment projects
Y2Y: the LS Rainbow Club collected funds to help LGBTQ+ youths needing a safe place to stay. The MS has cooked for the shelter. The US has made fleece blankets.
Youville House: MS and US students visit residents and provide enrichment via musical performances and writing workshops
