Afternoons of service

Twice a year, in the Fall and Spring, the Upper School organizes an afternoon of service for students wishing to engage in 2-3 hour hands-on projects at BB&N or out in the community. Previous sites have included Cradles to Crayons, Cambridge Community Center, Margaret Fuller House, and more.

Note: The Fall 2020 afternoon of service has been cancelled. We encourage students to engage in remote service learning opportunities instead.

Seasons of service

US students in grades 10 – 12 interested in pursuing a specific service learning project may apply for the 40-hour Season of Service Learning Program in lieu of an athletics season, once per academic year. The program involves curriculum work, in-person meetings, as well as hands-on service. At the end of the season, students present their work at the service X block share-out.

To apply for this program, students must attend one of the information sessions and sign up with a service learning coordinator.

Note: Due to the evolving situation regarding service and athletics for Fall 2020, the service learning program has been made available online for all students (click here for an overview). Contact the service learning coordinators to enroll, or follow this link.

BB&N initiatives

  • Drives

Every year, BB&N participates in various drives to support our community partners, such as Thanksgiving baskets to help local families, the Have-a-Heart Food Drive for patients at the Boston Medical Center -- and more.

  • Peer tutoring

Students who become peer tutors may claim up to 10 hours of service learning credit over the course of their time at BB&N. To find out more about peer tutoring, contact Angela Tabb, US Learning Specialist.

  • New for Fall 2020: Middle School-Upper School Students of Color Connections

In an effort to continue providing support to marginalized groups at BB&N, the DEIG team is launching a new mentoring program for students color, where Upper School students provide guidance and leadership training to Middle School students. Students participating in this program are eligible for up to 10 hours of service learning credit. To find out more, contact Simone Miles Esteves, MS DEIG Practitioner.
