Service Policy

service learning program (us)

Service Learning, at the Upper School, is rooted in civic engagement and social justice advocacy. In order to graduate, students must:

  • document in x2vol 40 hours of hands-on service at a non-profit institution or via a self-designed project (in the case of transfer students, the hours are pro-rated by 10 for each year the student did not attend BB&N)

  • submit a 500-word essay describing what they learned

The complete Upper School service learning graduation requirement policy can be found in the Program Planning Guide here

We are implementing changes and accommodations for the academic year 2020-2021 in order to help students fulfill the graduation requirement in the absence of in-person, hands-on opportunities:

  • new policy focused on civic engagement, with the possibility of submitting hours retro-actively (e.g. a student whose hours may not have been eligible for credit in the past can resubmit them if they fall in line with the new policy)

  • removal of sub-requirements such as the local requirement and 10-hour at one site

  • wider range of remote service learning opportunities available

  • online curriculum that fulfills the graduation requirement

  • in lieu of a 500-word reflective essay, students can now make their learning visible on our Students Impact Padlet
