In order to be eligible for a school adjustment counselor license in Massachusetts, you'll need to pass the Communication and Literacy MTEL (often abbreviated as C&L). It is split up into two sub tests: Reading and Writing. To pass, you'll need a score of 240 or higher on each sub test. The Department of Education has prepared study materials available online: Preparation Materials
You can take the C&L MTEL as many times as you need in order to pass. Additionally, you can take the sub tests in one sitting, or if you prefer, you can split them up on two different test dates. You will need to pass your MTELs PRIOR to completing any sort of SAC internship.
In order to register for the MTEL, you'll need a MEPID # from the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Click here for directions on how to receive one.
Once you obtain your MEPID #, you will create a MTEL test account. Click here for the website to either register or sign in.
When you register for your MTEL, please choose to have scores sent to Bay Path University. It allows us to receive early access to your score. You will still need to submit PDFs of your scores.
Prior to starting your School Adjustment Counselor Internship, you will need to submit your MTEL Scores and Internship information to the Field Placement and Licensure Office.
This is in google surveys, and you must be prepared to submit a PDF copy of your MTEL scores and your MEPID #. Your MEPID # is located in your ELAR account, and on your MTEL score report.
Please refer to the SAC Endorsement Process below. It will provide you step-by-step directions for applying for your license. Additionally, you will find a helpful timeline of the endorsement process. This will prepare you for what to expect once your degree is conferred.
You will receive a SAC Endorsement Google folder from the Licensure Coordinator. You will have access to this through your "shared with me" portion of your google drive. At the end of your program, you will be asked for a brief list of licensure documentation to be completed and uploaded to this google folder. Be sure to include copies of the following documents in your Google Endorsement Folder:
Copy of ELAR license application confirmation page
Copy of parchment transcript order
