A message regarding an important MTEL policy update from Dr. Ellen Rustico, Assistant Dean of Education:
The Education department has revised the MTEL policy for entering a practicum in licensure programs. Effective January 1, 2025, students/teacher candidates who have met the program requirements and have one outstanding subtest or test in a content area (i.e. one subtest of General Curriculum, or Early Childhood, ESL, Foundations of Reading, or Biology) may register and enroll in a practicum while planning to complete the outstanding MTEL requirement. The Communication & Literacy MTEL, or one of the approved alternatives for this licensure exam, must be passed in its entirety prior to practicum.
This policy change allows for the student/teacher candidate additional time to pass the outstanding MTEL while accruing practicum hours. This policy does not apply to the Reading Specialist licensure programs and the Special Education Administrator licensure programs.
Students/teacher candidates who have one outstanding MTEL and enter a practicum will be asked to sign a waiver (Waiver Link) acknowledging that the outstanding MTEL still must be passed for Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary endorsement.
If you have specific questions related to your program of study or MTEL progress, please contact the Program Director for your licensure area:
